Publisher's summary

Introducing the Custard Protocol series, in which Alexia Maccon's daughter, Prudence, travels to India on behalf of queen, country--and the perfect pot of tea.

When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do: she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India.

Soon she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves. Faced with a dire crisis (and an embarrassing lack of bloomers), Rue must rely on her good breeding--and her metanatural abilities--to get to the bottom of it all.

Critic reviews

" Soulless has all the delicate charm of a Victorian parasol, and all the wicked force of a Victorian parasol secretly weighted with brass shot and expertly wielded. Ravishing." (Lev Grossman)
"The world of Timeless is a unique recipe of steampunk and fantasy spiced with light sprinkling of romance. Its setting is rich for characters to romp about in, but the unbridled playfulness of the language and dialogue shines brightest." ( The Miami Herald)

Gail does it again, great new series!

Fabulous again! As much as I love Moira Quirk I wish you had continued this series with Emily Gray. She was fantastic performing the Parasol Protectorate Series. She had the pronunciations of the character names down and was the voice of the Maccon's.

Moira Quirk did a great job.

Moira Quirk is a wonderful narrator. She did pronounce some of the names a little differently than the narrator in the previous series which is something the production team should have been on top of before recording. I realize this is a sticking point for some of the previous reviewers but take that away and it was still a very fun listen. Thank you Ms. Carriger for another delightfully whimsical story.

Great story. Terrible Narrator.

Where the narrator for the Parasol Protectorate sailed the Ether.. Moira Quick's narrative dirigible crashed and burned. The vampire characters sounded like over exaggerated fops. All of the 'dandys' sounded awful. Alexia sounded like her mother... I wanted to like the book. I adored the story.. I just couldn't get past the terrible narration. :( I'll be buying the hard copy books as they use the same person for this and the prequel series. :(

love the story but not the narrator. the narrator needed to check previous works. The narrator doing the Parsol Protectorate did much better.

Amazing start to a new series!

I have loved the world that Carriger has built so far, and I feel that what they have done in this series is off to a great start. She does a good job in throwing in known characters from the past without letting them take center screen, and gives Prudence her own airship! I will be very sad if the series ends without her acting like a pirate at some point. If you have liked Carriger's other books, you will love this one.

Good Carringer story but too heavy in the accents

What made the experience of listening to Prudence the most enjoyable?

This is a good follow-on to the previous Carringer series about the floating school but the connections aren't really clear until about a third of the way into the book.

What did you like best about this story?

The use of the supernatural characters and characteristics

What does Moira Quirk bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Pretty good characterizations of the characters but a little heavy on the accents sometimes made the story a bit hard to follow.

Great!

If you love Carriger's other books you'll love this. Rue was great fun and it was nice to see the kids all grown up.

My one complaint is Moira Quirk's (who does a great job with everyone else) version of Lord Akeldama isn't what I wanted it to be. He's my favorite in the other books and hearing him played a different way was disheartening. Quirk is absolutely terrific with every other voice and is a fav narrator otherwise

Great beginning to a new series

Loved it! I think I'm going to like this series just as much as the first one about Prudence's mother.
