Publisher's summary

Albert Johannson's forgotten more than he remembers about his past, but two things he's sure of: He's lived a long, long time, and he doesn't trust anyone, particularly gods. He's not too fond of demons either, particularly the one that shows up in his kitchen looking for help with a supernatural investigation. Albert's a strangely gifted blacksmith, not a P.I., but crossing a demon can be deadly, so he reluctantly takes the job - which puts him in the path of a prickly arson detective named Melissa el Hajj who has trust issues of her own. Clashing at a crime scene, they uncover an ancient wrought-iron hexagram, a broken relic as old as Solomon. The thing may herald catastrophe unless Albert can mend it - but Albert has yet to grasp just what his special powers really mean....

It's your fault

The story isn't poorly written, it's not in need of editing, it's not confusing and the reason you may think these things is because you aren't familiar with the history and cultures that are referenced throughout the work. If you are familiar with the various religions, mythologies and history's of the many cultures that occupy the earth it's likely you will enjoy this story, just because it's fun to hear the various references. If you don't like the mythos of other people, religious fantasy or are insulted by either other cultures or are easily bruised by your own culture being used in a fantasy I'd suggest another book.

Wow, much, much better than I thought it would be.

I liked the story and loved the performance, not too long or too short. I wasn't sorry to hear it end because it ended right when and where, and how it needed to.

Confusing. Bully cop.

The main character has to put up with a bully female cop that drives me nuts. She is nothing but threats and intimidation... disgusting.

The story is obtuse and hard to follow with little background for characters. The characters are kept obtuse. Save yourself the headache.

Part-Roadtrip/Part-Romance. ALL-GREAT-FANTASY!!!!!

What did you love best about Powers?

The writing is sport on. The balk of the story is basically a roadtrip and while you know from the start their is going to be a romance at the end it is more genuine than alot of authentic romance novels.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Trick question. Both Al and Mel are just as enjoyable as the other.

Would you be willing to try another one of Steven Roy Grimsley’s performances?

No. The only redeeming quality of this narration is since there are only four character Mr. Grimsley has to portray though out the story it is fairly easy to keep track of who's who.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are plenty of laughs though out story but nothing that made me want to cry.

Any additional comments?

First and foremost this is modern fantasy not urban fantasy. What's the difference? Simply put modern fantasy is fantasy taking place in a modern settings but not not necessarily being centered around a city or town while urban fantasy is fantasy taking place in a certain city.or town.

it is okay

the story is a drag, there is no real explanation in the beginning of why the mc is doing what he is doing other then he was threatened by a demon.

the story was just bland.

I got it for free so I don't feel cheated but don't pay for his book if you can avoid it

Modern Fantasy Fun Journey

Where does Powers rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

My audiobook preference leans toward the Mystery/Thriller genre. But, I was attracted by the cover art and elected to take a listen, be entertained, and learn more about the modern/urban fantasy genre. Very pleasant and sparky, electrical journey.

What other book might you compare Powers to and why?

"The Chosen" by John G. Hartness.

What about Steven Roy Grimsley’s performance did you like?

Grimsley's narration pulled me in. I judge narrators by how well I forget that the book I'm listening to is being narrated. Grimsley was able to remove himself from the telling and become the characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't touch the sword. Unlock it!

A new twist on the old Gods

What a fanciful blending of Hephestus, Kali, and the blending of a dozen pantheons and old testament heroes into an odyssey to right wrongs within a marvelous love story. The author is also a foody so these Gods enjoy gourmet meals. A great read and narrator,

This book is more about idolatry and witchcraft

I really couldn't get into the story because every five seconds this book is mentioning a idol , or witchcraft, or demonology concepts. If this was a fantasy book cool.

Meh

I really wanted to like this book, the plot sounded promising, it started off well, but soon felt like all the energy was sucked from the story and quickly became boring. It became one of those stories you fall asleep to and then can't remember what exact point you stopped listening. The cooking parts for some reason were more exciting than the actual fighting. The narrator unfortunately, doesn't appear to do female characters at all, so that was that.
