Publisher's summary

The young world of Onneron has known peace for years. But now unease has spread across the land as disagreements between factions threaten each other's way of life.

The Brothers of the Onneron College dedicate themselves to higher learning and to mastering Paths of magic. They wish to remain independent, but the Onneron Church feels threatened by their ability to heal and vies to take control of their order. Treace, bullied and belittled, is unaware of the plan his deceased father has for him. A mentor sets him upon a path to join the prestigious college. Even if he is accepted, the tides of change are coming.

To Treace it's not about where we end up - it's the Paths we take to get there that matter.

Path of the Calm is the first book in the epic Saga of the Wolf series that follows Treace as he grows into a young man. It explores the bonds of friendship, deception, life lessons, love, swordplay, and magic.

Fantastic book and great beginning to a series!

If you could sum up Path of The Calm in three words, what would they be?

Magic. Epic. Creative.

What did you like best about this story?

Treace is a strong lead character and I am eager to see what he becomes. I love the dynamics of magic, the college and church. The author had a fantastic idea for a series and I am happy he was able to share it with us!

What about Tim Bruce’s performance did you like?

Fantastic performance. Loved the accent, it really brought the story to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely! There are not enough hours in the day!

Any additional comments?

Cannot wait for the second audiobook in this series.

Could have been better....

Narrator was a bit of a bore, and I expected more action. As far as fantasy goes....I thought the paths the brothers could choose were a bit weak....make water....lol. I can do that...lol

Good story, kinda showboaty

I like stories wherein the protagonist strives to be the best... But at times the author seems to be trying too-hard to paint the hero in a good light..

the reader was good, though a bit monotone at times

Solid first book

This was a good listen, the narrator was on point and story was solid. I wish the magic system was a little more fleshed out and that the main character was not so good at everything. It would be nicer if the main character struggled a bit more to learn new skills. With all that I still can't wait for the next one,

A decent book the pass the time.

Any additional comments?

The book is able to help me pass the time while I am at work, helping the day go by faster. There are only a few frustrations I have with the main character, which involve how "smart" he is at times. Besides this, the story is interesting enough that it isn't frustrating to read/listen to. I used the audible version for this book, so Tim Bruce does a good job narrating the story to help keep me immersed in the book.

Unrealized potential.

The protagonist in this story is constructed in a way that the half of his mind that should be dedicated to interpersonal interreactions is missing. It's as if he will never be more than a twelve-year-old boy in his mind. I really hope that book two, which I have already paid for, but shouldn't have, pans out better. I hope the story redeemed itself and it was just ended poorly in the 1st book.

great but not too thrilling

I felt the book is great overall and it is sensible. But the main character gets annoying after a while. Satisfying things seem to happen but for some reason I don't get the emotional reward all that often from these big events. I didn't really feel like I was drawn in to the whole premise since there's no intricate designs tying anything outside of their corner in the world.

I am sure things will get a bit more interesting as the new books come out. 4/5

Good, but not really epic

I enjoyed this book, but it really just felt like a build up. You expect that at some point the main character will defeat an enemy in an epic battle, but at the very end when it does not really come to it you get a little disappointed. Climaxes of this book can be very anticlimactic. This does have some good old things that I did like though. A kid overcoming being bullied. A magic school with a really big jerk of a teacher who is somehow respected by the other teachers. It kind of scratched that itch that you have after waiting for other books to be published. This world is supposed to be epic, but it feels like just a conflict between two cities. The world building makes it feel larger, but when you only really know of 5 cities in the book it seems really small. Also when people are trying to be secretive it just seems weird how they would use their own well known names at times.

If you like books like Name of the Wind or Dawn of Wonder you might like this book.
