Publisher's summary

A solar storm has just hit the world causing a EMP event. A emergency manager visiting Atlanta GA must find his way back home after this electromagnetic pulse has stranded him away from his vehicle and his beloved "bug out bag". With 180 miles to go to his destination, David must let his street smarts and survival skills kick in as food and water becomes scarce and societal breakdown proceeds at an unrelenting pace. The band of refugees from a Coronal mass ejection eventually move into a several lake cabins and try to work on their short term and long term survival. The lake is a beautiful place for a survival retreat, but is it safe with roving groups of lake residents all looking for what meager food resources remain after a EMP event has shut down society as we know it. Can society be recreated and restarted here, or will starvation and anarchy take over? Can a simple light in the lake be the solution to survival and the reconstruction of society, or is it merely a symbol of what has been and might be yet again?

simple beginning prepper primer

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would only recommend this book if my friend had never considered any type of preparation for a grid failure.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I enjoyed the recommendations for equipment at the end of the book and am sure the author has a dog in that hunt!

What didn’t you like about Duane Sharp’s performance?

Sharp's performance was poor. I almost returned the book because his style of voice for the various characters was so hard to listen to. After an hour or so it was easier to listen past his presentation of the characters.

Any additional comments?

This is a very simplistic book, with way to many easy coincidences, trying to help someone to prepare for some type of infrastructure failure. The plot was thin, and the main character too greedy for my taste, but the idea of coming together to help each other and celebrate life made it worth plowing through.

Returned so I could get my credit back

The protagonist is an alcoholic, self righteous, woman-hating loser who's living it up in the apocalypse because apparently everyone you meet is friendly and can't wait to share their booze with you. This story is one or two decent survival nuggets buried in a mountain of far fetched nonsense. Unfortunately, the narrator doesn't even provide lipstick for this hog. Pass.

Good survival tips. That's about it.

All the survival tips are really interesting, but the problem is the storyline is razor thin. The characters aren't very unique or interesting. The characters aren't very believable. The main character mentions a brother at one point but never again, even after the world ends. There is also virtually no conflict. Every person the main characters meet is helpful and nice and any real struggle is easily resolved.

The character development was lacking. Lots of dialogue was cut simply by the main character explaining what was said and there were very little physical descriptions. When the story ended, if it weren't for the timer counting down, I would have had no idea the story was about to end. The plot never really went anywhere. If you're looking for survival tips, this book has it. That's about it.

More instruction then story but okay.

Have a pen and paper ready when you listen to this book it has many great ideas in it but the story well I'd say we could only hope, but I honestly don't see it happening. People are just way to selfish and to my experience always have a private agenda to gain more than the "other guy". But it sure would be nice if such a condition with the "local population" around you could be this cordial!

Couldnt stop listening!

This a great survival story filled with great tips and tricks. The characters are believable and the narrator does a outstanding job of switching back and forth amongst the voices as well as showing enthusiasm for the story. He is a professional actor by the way I looked him up, very talented. The classic prepper trilogy by the author is beloved by many and this audible version is like going to a movie and being immersed in humor and preparedness. I highly recommend it.
