Publisher's summary

There's a hero in all of us. And one scientist is willing to kill to find it....

Dorian Anino thought her research would change the world. The discovery of the so-called "hero-gene" taught her and her team that it was possible for some humans to have incredible strength, speed, and agility. But when Dorian discovers that the gene only expresses in people on the brink of death, her team can't help but be disappointed. Except for Dorian's protégé, who opts to poison the water supply to unearth more heroes....

Luc Gray is a hero through and through. But when the squadron leader loses a pilot and then his command in quick succession, he has no idea what to do next. Without a mission, he jumps at an assignment from Dorian to investigate the pilot's death. But when the mission puts him in grave danger, Luc is about to find out just how much of a hero he is....

To defeat a scientist who wants to play god, Dorian may just have to create her own team of heroes....

On a Pale Ship is the first book in a new series in the Privateer Tales universe, a set of military sci-fi space operas. If you like amazing tech, superhuman abilities, and interstellar action, then you'll love Jamie McFarlane's powerful tale.

New Series in the Privateer Tales Universe

On a Pale Ship is the first audiobook of a new series set in Jamie McFarlane's Privateer Tales universe. This audiobook stands alone so it isn't necessary to listen to any others first but if you have heard other books in his universe you will be thrilled to both revisit a few well-loved friends and be introduced to new interesting characters. Luc Gray becomes the leader of a team of heroes and along with the brilliant scientist and business magnate Dorian Anino, Luc and his team will put everything on the line to defeat their superhuman adversaries. This is my first book with Kevin Clay as narrator and while it will take some getting used to, I think he did well. Highly recommend this audiobook if you like military sci-fi space opera.

Different than I was expecting

Let me start by saying that I received a copy of this audiobook as a free give-away. I am not, however writing this review under any obligation. I just wanted to share my experiences with the book with other potential listeners.

Having read all of Mr. Farlane's other books, I was anticipating a very short introduction to his new characters and then Let the Adventure Begin. This book contains a long in depth introduction to three characters who are then killed off. I was a little put off when I realized that after 2 hours of listening, I still had not met the main characters. But the payoff is worth it!!!! This adventure is really about the characters after they are mostly dead. The story is fast paced and once you get to the meat of the story, easy to identify with. This book serves to set up the rest of the series and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Much of what I liked about Privateer Tales...

It's a good start. Characters are little stiff but get better by the halfway point. Some familiar names pop up here and there - a possible sign of things to come?

Awesome! Another direction to privateer tales

At first the narrator sounded mechanical and I worried it would remain. But he quickly jumped into personifying each voice and delivered the great story in full regalia! Glad to see Jamie McFarland has written more than the privateer tales since I'm all out of books!

awesome new storyline

as always, I do love how the author paints characters and gives them their little quirks and idiosyncrasies. I hope he takes up this storyline and adds more books to it

Who is writing these great reviews?

I am returning this book as soon as this airplane lands. I’m 3hrs into this book and I have no compelling reason to continue. There might be a good story in there somewhere but I’m not willing to wade through all the hours of fluff.
I can not recommend this book to anyone.
