Story
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Ferryman Charlie Dawson saves dead people - somebody has to convince them to move on to the afterlife, after all. Having never failed a single assignment, he's acquired a reputation for success that's as legendary as it is unwanted. It turns out that serving as a Ferryman is causing Charlie to slowly lose his mind. Deemed too valuable by the Ferryman Institute to be let go and too stubborn to just give up in his own right, Charlie's pretty much abandoned all hope of escaping his grim existence. Or he had, anyway, until he saved Alice Spiegel.

He would try harder. With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick. Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway.

The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Eh - decent but also trite and lacking.
I had mixed feeling about the first one. I liked it, appreciated its unique story and suprising twists and turns. Never been a fan of conversation centric writing though. I prefer more atmosphere, inner dialogue and less talk. Also, it continually felt like a teaser. At the end, it seemed like a teaser for a less than satisfying quicky.
This book was similar yet its worst aspects were magnified. The addition of romance gave the story this sappy cheap element I did not appreciate.
These books are a bit like Cheetos. Addictive yet leaves you feeling unsatisfied with nothing gained from having consumed them.
The narrator did a spectacular job with all the different voices and his work added a great deal to the experience of the book.
If the author continues in this genre, I'd like to have much much more about the aliens and much much less about politicians and media people. We are subjected to them enough in the real world without them invading our fictional lives as well.

Great follow up
Good follow up and continuation of the story. But...... the book would be half its length if the author didn’t seemingly repeat everything and go on and on about the same stuff.

A media-age tale of first contact
The first book, Not Alone was a bit of a sleeper hit for breaking the mold of atypical first contact books by merely moving the lens from action or high tier political takes for an alien-obsessed everyman, who stumbles his way into a multi-tiered alien conspiracy. I'd call it, dare I say, anti-dystopian, thus felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air.
This go around, our trio of the idealistic Snowden-like Dan McCarthy, his older brother, and ex-Iraq vet, Clark, media guru wizard Emma, has expanded two seats to Emma's younger sister (post-modeling career) Tera, and eccentric Italian space-enthusiast billionaire Elon Musk stand-in "Teamo".
Most of the action of the book takes place in TV debates on popular TV shows, social media events going viral, all while searching for the last remaining plaque. There are still a few twists, William Godfrey remains mostly villainess (although no character can be described as evil) as he still commands the GSC with an iron fist, while Richard Walker is entirely a hermit. It makes sense that the book is media-obsessive as it's an accurate reflection of today, where national policy can be set via idiotic presidential tweets informed by watching right-wing, and thus reflects the reality as such. If there's something to be said about the first Not Alone book, is it was probably a little too accurate about the power of perception in mass media. The book occasionally drags as full press conferences are penned out in full detail and conspiracy-wonk Billy Kendrick still has far too much insight and prominence for a fringe cultural icon. At least, President Slater, seems a little more balanced this go around.
If the first book was slow and tedious, this book certainly would only expand that feeling, but I found that the reserved nature of Dan & friends, fresh as there are not entirely black and white villains. Even Dan, follows his real-life model, Edward Snowden that despite his desire to reveal all, realizes that all information can't be released in one swoop and thus must be carefully dolled out... Thus, the book ponders the power of knowing too many secrets, the desire to tell people close to you, and it's bonding power between Dan and his friends.
In the end, it's a nice ride although the aliens could be described as slightly underwhelming a unique and reasonably entertaining listen, a parable about leaking state secrets more than about aliens.

Another LONG Tale
It was good to hear from the characters we met in Not Alone: One.
(Dan, Clark, Emma, and all the politicians and journalists.)
Second Contact is more direct than the first. I recommend listening to the first book before trying this one, as so much in Second Contact will be familiar. You will already know so much about the characters, and this is the fun element of the book. You'll also understand the politics and deceptions.

Just epic...
For reference... here's what we said about bk1 (both my husband and I enjoyed the book)...
I was really quite pleased with Craig's tale of international intrigue and aliens, and a not-quite average guy who precipitated the whole mess... I rather enjoyed the narration by J.P.Cronin as well. the only point on which I find fault, is that at around the 3/4 completed point, the story starts to drag a bit... Until the Very Cool revelation at the end! Get it, enjoy it, and thank me later! Lol...
I Loved this book!!! A year has passed, and once again Dan finds himself embroiled in an alien intervention...
This story throws us back into a tale of intense national, and international intrigue... keeping me on the edge of my seat! Unlike the first book, there wasn't any part of Second Contact that dragged on...
James Patrick Cronin proved that he was the right choice for the task of narrating this epic novel!

nothing there
I could not finish. The countdown became unbearable. I quit around C-37. Falconer writes well but there is negligible content. It goes on and on with nothing really happening.

this enjoyable read cannot disappoint anyone!
not exactly sci-fi, not wholly a love story, political elements without being political, enough twists to be unpredictable...simply good stuff and a great read!

Epic sequel
With a little getting reminded for character reacquaintances and previous story line away the story went.
There were some long winded sections. Overall another international story, just closer to home this time.

Epic. Now I want to see the movie!
The characters were so well developed. The writing is so great that I had no problem stepping into this world. I couldn’t stop listening and will be thinking about the D and C days for a long time.
