Publisher's Summary

For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon. In the city, a foretelling of the future is uttered. On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, a child is born, an infant prophesied to change the world. That child must be found before he can be killed by the forces of the Shadow. And Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a young soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together. But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine is of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose King has just died, and Lan is considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, and the plots of those seeking power threaten their lives. The novella "New Spring" told a part of the story, in compressed form...the novel New Spring tells the whole story.

"The most enjoyable of the series yet!"

Simply wowing! If you have read any of series you will not be disappointed. If you're new to the wheel then get some pillows and a glass of wine to prepare for your new addition. It's amazing.

    "Meh...."

nothing all that special this morning. If you wanted to get a glimpse of the wheel of time before you started reading that entire 5 million words this would be a great way to do it. However, nothing really of consequence ever seems to happen in the book it's not bad but it's not great

    "Delightful"

Lovely book. a nice backstory for Moraine, Suian, and Lan. going through the final testing for AesSedai again was fun, and seeing how... inexperienced Moraine is probably to her role in WoT was a treat. Audiobook itself had that annoying feature where the chapters rarely line up with Audible's chapter divisions.

"Good book marred by Audible's performance"
Would you try another book from Robert Jordan and/or Kate Reading and Michael Kramer ?

I'm currently working through Wheel of Time, so I would definitely keep reading Jordan's books.

    Any additional comments?

Audible's bookmark system didn't work well. I can only fast forward and rewind at an 8x rate, couldn't skip around to find my place, and when I marked a bookmark on my Kindle app, it wouldn't show up or line up on the web player for Audible meaning I always had to spent exorbitant amounts of time trying to find my place... Also the sections don't seem to line up well with chapters, since there are fewer sections than chapters. This made for a painful reading process. This was my first attempt on Audible and I'm right now considering if I want to make a second attempt or give up altogether on it.

"Not What I Expected But In A Good Way "
Where does New Spring rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I think it's in the middle somewhere. It's a good story but just feels different than the other Wheel of Time books. Still a good story and one that I am going to read again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of New Spring?

When Lan and Moraine first meet.

Which character – as performed by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer – was your favorite?

I think Kate Reading in this book put on an outstanding performance. Both Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are excellent narrators. In my top five for sure.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I actually almost did. I ended up listening to this book over a weekend.

    Any additional comments?

I have read mixed reviews on New Spring and I also take reviews with a grain of salt because I swear some reviewers always have to find something wrong. Me I personally lean on the "This is good" side of things. I enjoyed New Spring thoroughly and I have no complaints. In The Wheel of Time series Moraine sometimes seems like she has no heart and isn't human at all but this book straightens that out. I am more of a Moraine and Lan fan after this book than I was before. I would Recommend not reading this book until after book 8 or 9 though. If I would of read this first not only would it of spoiled some minor things in the Eye of The World. I feel like it's good to come back to this once you know some more terminology otherwise you might be. What is that mean or what is that? I knew what everything meant when I read this. Overall a great book. Totally wish Robert Jordan didn't pass away. We would have two books after this one. I think it would of been great to see Moraine and Lan adventure together to find Rand.

    "So disappointing."

90% petty women banter, attitude and conversation. Much less action or story than any of the other books. BIG fan of the other books, even with the small letdown before the final 3. Even the inevitable ending with the bonding was poorly developed and felt totally rushed.

This prequel isn't my favorite in the series, but I enjoy the back story. It is more bearable to listen to than to read this one.

"The beginning of the wheel's turn"

This is a great book, just as you would expect from the pen of Robert Jordan. It tells the tale of how two of the characters that play such a vital role in subsequent adventures first met. Although an excellent and compelling read, I would say that it is not necessary to read this book before embarking on the rest of the series. Rather, it is a book to read for interest: it does not add anything to the overall story line of the series. In fact, I would read this book after reading book 1 and not before.

Where does New Spring rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love listening to Jordan's world just one last time after listening to all of his books. rarely have a I been submerged so intensely by an invented world of fantasy . Every character gets his worth.

    "Fills in the gaps"

A nice story that fills in some of the gaps and questions asked as the wheel of time progresses. Mostly building the story of the Aes Sedai, discovery of the black ajas revival, how moraine and lab met and how the hunt for the dragon reborn began.

    "One for the fans"

I listened to this audiobook after finishing the Wheel of Time books. The story centres around how Moiraine and Lan meet each other.

My problem with it is that I thought some of the weakest aspects of the Wheel of Time is when the mystique of the Aes Sedai was spoilt when I realised they only have four characters: Moiraine; Siuan Sanche; the giggling/crying novices; and the rest are stern overbearing Nuns from a 1950's Irish convent school that try to defeat their enemies through the power a harsh glare. This book really wallows in this, but worst is that Moiraine gets reduced to the giggly/crying novice character. I'd always assumed see was born tough but this book spoilt that illusion.

It was interesting enough to get back into the WoT world and I did liked Moirain's storyline. It's just I I found myself getting annoyed with the execution of it.

"A Prelude to an Epic Story"

This is the story of how Lan and Moiraine meet. We will see them forge a bond made stronger by their common goal. Fighting the Dark. The war between Good and Evil started long before they came to the Two Rivers and in this book we will have a look, at their beginning. This is were these two start their journey towards A Memory of Light. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

    "Background reading"

I listened to this book whilst waiting for the final book to be published. It added some very interesting background material about Moraine, Lan and Siuan. It gave much more depth and explaination of events that are referred to only in passing in the other books. This is a definite must read for those who have read a few of the wheel of time books, although I don't think it should be read first. I have recently gone back to start of the series and so have been glad to know more of the background to these 3 intergral characters.

I really enjoy the character of Lan, so any story with more of him can't be bad!

    "Prequel Short"

I often imagine the Wheel of Time series as a 7 Season, 24 episode TV Fantasy series (which would work!!). In fact have taken notes each time I've listened to the books, waiting for the next release, and hope to put together a script for the first double-episode of Season 1 (which will cover Books 1 and 2) 'Beltine'. This along with notes for each episode thereafter (S01E03: Journey to Baerlon; S01E04: Aridhol; S01E05: Voyage to Whitebridge; S01E06: Whitecloaks; S01E07: Suspicion; S01E08: Four Kings; S01E09: Caemlyn; S01E10: The Ways; S01E11: Tar Valon; S01E12: The Borderlands; S01E13: The Green Man (part 1); S01E14: The Green Man (part 2).
Okay - so I've thought a lot about this!! Now, while I was waiting patiently for Knife of Dreams to come out (Book 11), New Spring was released and confused m, as I thought at first it was book 11, and wondered why book 11 would be a Prequel!?! Turns out this is just because it was the 11th book Jordan released, but it wasn't 'Book 11'!!
So, fascinated I picked it up.
First of all, it is written as by the commanding style of Jordan by Book 11, which is very different to his style during Book 1, which reminds me of his Conan books. So if you listn to this first, and then read Book 1, it just doesn't feel right. Kind of like watching Episode 1 of Star Wars before A New Hope (Ep 4). So my first advice, is if you plan to re-read any of the books before you get to the next one (which actually is a good idea as the series is VERY complex!!), don't read this first. In fact in my TV Episode plan, this would come out at the cinema as a stand-alone movie between seasons 5 and 6.
It is great! It explores the relationship between Moiraine and Lan, and really gives you a sense of understanding that could only really be guessed at previously. As a Prequel it works great, but as stand-alone, not so much. You see the story it follows tends to be in the way. It is rushed, and feels like it is there simply to 'try' to stand alone. Overall okay
