Publisher's Summary

Winner of the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

Mythago Wood is regarded as one of the finest fantasy novels of the 20th century.

Deep within the wildwood lies a place of myth and mystery, from which few return, and of those few, none remain unchanged. Ryhope Wood may look like a three-mile-square fenced-in wood in rural Herefordshire on the outside, but inside, it is a primeval, intricate labyrinth of trees, impossibly huge, unforgettable... and stronger than time itself.

Stephen Huxley has already lost his father to the mysteries of Ryhope Wood. On his return from the Second World War, he finds his brother, Christopher, is also in thrall to the mysterious wood, wherein lies a realm where mythic archetypes grow flesh and blood, where love and beauty haunt your dreams, and in promises of freedom lies the sanctuary of insanity....

    "ok"

A reasonable fantasy. It drew on so many different legends and myths that at time it felt a little bit directionless.....and I'm still not sure I "get" the whole basis for the mythagos.
Not completely disappointed I used a credit on it, but I very much doubt I'd ever listen to it again. (whereas I revisit Sanderson / Rothfuss/ Abercrombie books happily)

    "Creative and refreshing."
What made the experience of listening to Mythago Wood the most enjoyable?

The fact that this is described as 'fantasy' gave me pre-conceptions about the plot which I am pleased to say were very happily challenged. An unexpectedly engaging book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mythago Wood?

The moment I realised I was listening to a book very different from, but not worse for being utterly different to, the one I was expecting.

What about Rupert Degas’s performance did you like?

As always, his different accents for the different characters makes the book stand out as a dramatic performance rather than just one that is read to you.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    It is intriguing, certainly.

    Any additional comments?

It is a book that doesn't really sit very well under any 'genre'; it has elements of myth, fantasy, mystery among others, so buy it and listen with an open mind.

    "An old favourite."

My dad bought me this book when I was around 15 and I've loved the story since then. I was delighted to find it on Audible all these years later, read by one of my favourite narrators.
Give it a try, if you love legend and tales of the Wildwood, you won't be disappointed!

"Rupert degas .. could read me a phonebook"

Anything Rupert narrates becomes ethereal and atmospheric. I love listening to him and this does not disappoint. Listen to the narration carefully and the twists and turns. It is not a thriller but more subtle and Degas is in charge the whole time. Loved it.

    "Mythago wood"

I have loved this book since first reading it many years ago. This wonderful mix of fantasy and mythology, love story and folklore, leaves you wanting more and thinking about humanity, time and the nature of story. I really hope the other books in this series are also made available in audio format.

"great idea not sure it worked"

i really loved the idea of this book but it felt rushed and incomplete. after the detail of the characters and myths was described the story felt lacking and the authors winding storyline unfinished. the performance was good i just felt underwhelming by the content

This was the book that showed me fantasy could be good. Forgot about the later books, this is the first and the best.

Narration was good, the narrator sounded like Richard Burton at times, listened at x1.5 playback speed.

    "fabulous deep storytelling"

loved this book. Anyone with a passing interest in myth and legend should experience this.

Rupert Degas is a master narrator and is the reason I first downloaded this book. Glad I did.
