Publisher's Summary

Dirty Harry meets Twilight. Number 3 in the break-out series and a follow-up to Monster Hunter International and Monster Hunter Vendetta.

Earl Harbinger may be the leader of Monster Hunter International, but he's also got a secret. Nearly a century ago, Earl was cursed to be a werewolf. When Earl receives word that one of his oldest foes, a legendarily vicious werewolf that worked for the KGB, has mysteriously appeared in the remote woods of Michigan, he decides to take care of some unfinished business. But another force is working to bring about the creation of a whole new species of werewolf. When darkness falls, the final hunt begins, and the only thing standing in their way is a handful of locals, a lot of firepower, and Earl Harbinger's stubborn refusal to roll over and play dead.

    "Another solid story from Correia"

I have a little bit of a crush on Earl Harbinger. The story held me and kept me engaged. This is actually no small thing considering that I don't really enjoy all the blood and guts aspects of this sort of story but so far Correia has paced it enough and made the characters interesting enough that I don't mind the rest.

I wish the ending had been a little different but it made sense, unfortunately.

I liked the break from the rest of the monster hunters. Earl is a great character and I appreciated his backstory. Can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

Well written. Ah...when gun nuts write books! Kind of messes with the whole stereo type of 'gun nuts' though. Great read.

I'm actually a day old tart, filled with maple custard. Perhaps, this reads as a rational introduction to others, and you are deliberately misreading it, because, come on, maple custard.

    Story
"Christopher Walken in a Werewolf Wonderland."

I bet others have commented, but one of the main protagonists sounds JUST like Christopher Walken. It couldn't have been by accident. Listening to a KGB dual personality werewolf Christopher Walken talk about his feelings sort of took on a story of it's own. It sort of made me love and hate this book, without giving too much away, I was totally rooting for Nick by the end.

The main protagonist, Earl, bothered me, as I considered him a hypocrite, and I couldn't get Alabama in his accent, but maybe it's a part of Bama I haven't been? Maybe it's the character's history, which makes him naturally pushy and assuming, that irked me.

The plot is pretty straight forward; big bad monsters, with many monster minions, attack quaint town, in flawless plan of world domination. Insert small group of first and second level protagonists, who don't like that kind of thing.

The government gives assistance, sending a handful of douches in Brooks Brother's suits, who maybe want to call Armageddon on the protagonists, and shut the party down, because their suits give them a false sense of superiority. Or something to that effect. Some of my best friends are feds, and they laugh about always being portrayed as the bad guys.

There were some interesting creatures, psychological situations (you get glimpses into the antagonist's heads, which are satisfyingly complex), and good plot twists.

Oliver Wyman is a Good narrator, but I have trouble paying attention to him. I've heard the term, 'paint the walls in exclamation marks!' but this is the first time I've heard someone who can paint the wall in periods. Even during frantic Darwinian fight scenes it sounds like Earl, Heather, and most of the developed characters (except Nick) are about to lounge against a wall, and maybe feel vexed about things. Perhaps this was a gimmick for Earl's character, since he's so bad at feeling fear, but it makes all the 'SISS! BANG! BOOM!' moments turn into 'Siss. Bang. Boom'

I'll probably increase my performance rating from 3 stars, cause his voice acting is good, I just think I'd be re-listening to the story Right Now if it wasn't for the monotone.

    "Awesome!"

I have said before that this series is not my norm. I enjoyed the first 2 in the series. I didn't like this book in the beginning, it was a little slow to start. Earl's backstory is the only thing that kept me interested at first. Once the story got going though, I couldn't stop listening. Wyman did his usual fantastic job.

"A Great Addition to the Monster Hunter Series"
What made the experience of listening to Monster Hunter Alpha the most enjoyable?

Earl Harbinger is definitely one of the best characters in the Monster Hunter series and having a book entirely devoted to him pays off immensely. I didn't feel in the least ripped off in the least that we were following Earl and Owen Zastava Pitt doesn't show up at all. I know some people might, but put that out of your mind. Earl is such an excellent character, getting to hear about his rich history is plenty of reward, and Owen I'm sure will be back in book 4.

Much like the Chronicles of Narnia (Magician's Nephew), you could read this book alone, but it is best to read the other two books first because it makes this tale much richer because of it.

"I love this series, Hope for more!"
Would you listen to Monster Hunter Alpha again? Why?

    Yes, and I have!

What did you like best about this story?

    The truth and fantasy intwined!

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Belief in the older, darker existence of our belief in nightmare creatures.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    All of it!

    Any additional comments?

We all love a love story that ends well.

    "More Kick-Butt Monstery Fun"

This is the third book in the Monster Hunter series, and I was surprised to find it my favorite so far. After two books narrated by a different main character, I was concerned that I wouldn't like the main focus shifting to another character -- Earl, the head of Monster Hunters, Inc., and King of the Werewolves.

But this book was AWESOME. It was action-packed, had a touch of romance, had sympathetic heroes and even a particularly interesting villian/hero of questionable motivations. This story and its characters were complex, and simple all at the same time, with enough nuggets of humor to release the tension just when you think the story is getting too tense to handle.

If you haven't read the first two books, you'd still be fine starting with this one. It stands alone in its pursuit of kick-butt monstery fun, assuming your idea of monstery fun is guns and gory mayhem in a desolate, northern Michigan town where the undead are running amok.

    "Best so far!!!!"

This book threw me off at first, because its the third in a series, and the main character changes. So it is not from his point of view. But it was very good. It ends up being from the point of view of my favorite character in the book so it worked well for me. Cant wait for the next book. I'm as curios to see what direction the series will take next as I am to see what happens in the story. All in all I can sum this book up in a few words. ACTION, GUNS, AND A LITTLE BIT OF ROMANCE.........
