The national best-selling "master of deception and tension" (Black Gate) returns to the Vampire Earth.... The race is on to claim the area between the Ohio River and Tennessee. What's left of the resistance is hiding out in the tangle of central Kentucky hills - leaving the powerful, well-organized Kurian vampires the opportunity to fill the void.

Major David Valentine knows there's only one way for them to find help before the Kurians settle in: a desperate dash by hijacked rail, followed by a harrowing river journey.

Valentine unites friends old and new in the effort - but the Kurian Order won't easily yield the blood-soaked Kentucky soil.

I loved this series until this book. What a let-down. I felt like someone else wrote this. The action sequences were completely disjointed, very hard to follow. It almost seemed like there were errors in the audiobook! Please get this series back on track E.E.!

so sad!

I have listened to all 8 books in this series and really enjoyed each one. I agree with the other reviews, this book left me thinking "wait what the hell just happened?" I felt like I was not told a part of the story that should have been explained. Not only was that a huge disappointment because I felt a bit confused but the story line was weak, E.E. Knight is now only writing to prolong his novel count. My recommendation is to save your credit. Move to the Brandon Sanderson Mistborn Trilogy if you haven't read it yet!

totall disapointment

I really enjoy this series, and was surprised when this novel was so different from the others. The detail of events was incomplete, and the story was left half-told. Perhaps if I listen a second time, I'll figure out what I missed--but so far, I'd have to say the author is coasting from the last novels to get to the next novel, and this story is left wanting (badly.) I was tremendously disappointed--even character development was poor, and this guy is great at character definition--new elements were shown all over the place, but not developed. I will probably buy the next book when it comes, but hopefully I will get more story for my money. I wonder if Mr. Knight was under a lot of pressure to get this to press, or if he had a maximum word count or something. Just not his style.

A transitional novel?

I am a big fan of the series. But it seems like the author has simply run out of ideas. Too much of the story is overlong exposition. It seems like it was there to pad overall length. Too many callbacks, and too many characters crammed into the story.
