Publisher's Summary

In the year 2280, an alien fleet attacked the Earth. Their weapons were unstoppable, their defenses unbreakable. Our technology was inferior, our militaries overwhelmed. Only one starship escaped before civilization fell.

Earth was lost. It was never forgotten.

Fifty-two years have passed. A message from home has been received. The time to fight for what is ours has come.

Welcome to the rebellion.

"First they decimate, over-take, then they remake"

An enjoyable take on the alien earth invasion story. While the plot seems too coincidental and too timely at times, the author makes up for this with his unique skill at creating a cast of characters and situations that keeps one's interest flowing.

The narrator was very good and had an excellent dynamic range that made it clear when jumping between genders, age groups and cultural accents.

I'll be on the lookout for audible book 2.

    "Neither fantasy nor hard SF"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book if for those SF Military readers that do not pay attention to details nor desire technical coherence.

What could M. R. Forbes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    1) Make the military dialog realistic. 2)Make operationalizing a warship, that been in retirement for 50 years, more involved than having the protagonist speak to the ships computer and say "Maggie, fire it up" and having the ship ready to move in the next couple minutes.3) Not slip up on details such as describing bloated bodies that died 50 years prior.4) It was kinds hard to believe that Aliens with some incredible tech did not have airborne or spaceborne sensors, to detect people on the ground, at least as good at we have today.5) Character personalities were shallow and development was minimal.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator certainly did better than I could have. However, by the time I was most of the way through the book I was left feeling that the narrator was trying too hard.

    Any additional comments?

I am surprised that this criticism has not been raised prior to the point of impacting the ratings.

    Story
    "an extremely entertaining novel"

It is a half-century after the Earth is in ruins from an alien invasion.  Only a handful of humans remain, trying to stay alive and communicate with their counterparts on the one remaining hidden spaceship.  The aliens have shields that have never been penetrated, unknown origins or motivations.  Now they have decided to methodically exterminate the last few humans from Earth.

But it’s not over until it’s over.  Luck and an accidental discovery allow the humans one last desperate attempt to fight back.  Now, a daring attempt from an ace pilot and a few brave resistance fighters on Earth are all that stand between total extinction and taking back humanity’s home.

This action based Sci-Fi thriller is full of ordinary heroes against overwhelming odds.  Little is told about the aliens until late in the novel.  It gives the listener the feeling of desperation that the survivors would feel.  What possible hope could they have, after all?  And it is very effective.  The characters are believable and we easily empathize with them.  It is also interesting that two generations have gone by since the invasion with few living witnesses to the original apocalypse.  Many survivors simply want to hide and live as best they can in the ruins.  Only when that option is removed do they have to join in the fight.

Jeff Hays provides an exceptional performance, exuding the overwhelming foreboding and desperation in his voice that the characters would feel.  His accents and characterizations are excellent and the listener is swept up in the story.  It would be difficult to imagine a better match for the novel.

Alien invasion, desperate humans, star-ships, cool weapons, exciting fight scenes and flawed heroes all combine into an extremely entertaining novel.  It is clearly the first in a series of unknown length and will have the listener looking forward to the sequels.  Highly recommended.

Where does Man of War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I enjoyed this book, it starts off slowly and builds up and towards the end you are on the edge of your seat. The girl lieutenant is really annoying trying to force herself onto Donovan. Her words just don't sound realistic and her voice is somehow false.

What does Jeff Hays bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The reader is good, it makes a lot of difference, he reads quickly but sounds as if he is actually enjoying the story. I have listened to some books and the reader sounds so bored that it puts you off listening. This guy is good.

"Lost cause - or humanity's hope?"
What did you like most about Man of War?

The immediate opening of Man of War sets the stage for the rest of the book. It is tension filled but also beautiful, a race in space to collect a message from resistance fighters on an Earth now overun and occupied by a seemingly undefeatable a!ien race. This book is more than just a fight-it-out-in-space story or a simple war for the planet between military and the invading armies. It is thoughtfully imbued with ideas of loves and loyalties, of how far to go before all must be found too much to continue, as well as providing exciting action and good characterisations.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Hays’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have heard one other book read by Jeff Hayes and, as in that previous story, his range of voices in dialogue is remarkable and the text is impeccably given. He is easy to listen to and carries the story in complete complement with the author's writing.

    Any additional comments?

I love science fiction and read a lot, so it is refreshing to find a different approach to the 'them and us' scenario. This is the first of a new series and I will definitely be looking for the following book: there are so many possibilities opening up, i am really intrigued to see where it will take us.
My thanks to Jeff Hayes who gifted me this book without any conditions.

A bit slow to start, but it soon picked up. The only reservation I did have was the voice of the General. Ugh!

That aside, I will look forward to Book 2.

Would you listen to Man of War again? Why?

Maybe, in a year or so - story was compelling, and interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

The old ship coming back into the fight, Battlestar Galactica-esque.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Hays’s other performances? How does this one compare?

    No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

The story was interesting, and not too far-fetched to make immersion possible. Well performed narration, but the southern drawl accent was corny. All in all, recommended.
