Publisher's summary

The final chapter in Mercedes Lackey's spellbinding fantasy trilogy!

The Herald-Mage, Vanyel, and his Companion, Yfandes, are alone responsible for saving the once-peaceful kingdom of Valdemar from the forces of a master who wields a dark, forbidding magic. And if either Vanyel or Yfandes falters, both Valdemar and its Herald-Mage must pay the ultimate price.

excellent

A favorite of mine. The story of a man that survives, a rough youth and into a love that surmounts all, to the horrible loss of that love, and being given his greatest desire of his youth, before he learned what he really desired. His survival and giving of his life in to selfless acts of honor, through the pain that stays fresh to the finding of a new life, to his death. That sums all three books. This is the final installment of those books. Now take that man's story and put it in a world of magic and magical creatures, of life by the sword, in serving a cause greater then yourself. Amazing story

The narrator was perfect. He brought the characters to life, the world to life and even managed excellent pronunciations of strange words in non existent languages, I wish he narrated all the books. but then perhaps it is the fact that he portrayed Vanyel so well is some of the reason he is so good.

One of favourites, and still makes me cry

I loved the trilogy from the start years ago, and it unfailingly still manages to make me laugh through much of it, chuckle with tenderness from time to time, and cry and smile both at the end. A very powerful young adult story that you keep returning to over the years, especially in this audio version. The reading performance is very comfortable for me, the voice soothing and expressive where necessary, not overly so, just as it sould be in my mind's imagination.

There is a fault in the recording, though, for which I can only give it a 4 for overall. It is not the performance itself at fault, not the story in the least, but a technical glitch, I think.

!!! Warning for spoilers (there is goes): when hawk brothers come to heal Van, and they goin forces all four of the participants, there is a part which I love dearly missing from the recording. I know it is there, because I read it a couple of times before listening. The description of the process of calling the mage back to himself. And in the recording there is nothing, just the beginning of the scene, and then we are already at the beginning of the next scene in half a second. It was a pity to miss on this episode in the audio. End of spoiler.

Can reading be re-done?

Such a terrible listen for a great book. No pauses so your mind can shift scenes, etc. Maybe because this was recorded long ago. But it doesn't give the book justice. Hope this can be re-done.

Final of Vanyel's story

This is the conclusion of Vanyel's story as the last Herald Mage. A wonderful read. Great narration.

Good Closure

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would have Mercedes Lackey and the editor go back and remove all of the "ly" words. They greatly distracted me and took away from the story. You will see this same statement in the reviews for the other two books.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was a very good way to sum things up. Like in life, nothing was perfect but it was good.

Which scene was your favorite?

I disliked a scene where some mercenaries had captured the last Herald Mage. It was hard to get through but it did elicit a strong reaction from me. Any scene that is written in such a way to get a strong reaction, whether I liked the feelings or not, is a good scene.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Most likely... Depends on how well the first two were made.

Any additional comments?

Book one was not great. Book two was better and Book Three is certainly the best of the trilogy. Not my favorite but it was entertaining and I looked forward to listening on my commute each morning.

Fantastic story, poor narration

My absolute favorite series since it came out. The narrator has a tendency to try to add drama where there is none. There are no pauses between scenes so it can be confusing since there are no variations in voices either. Especially near the end pf the story because it jumps between Stef and Van’s POV but there’s no indication of the change until a name is mentioned because there’s no pause. The lack of voice differences makes it difficult to discern who is saying what in longer dialogues.
