Publisher's Summary

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.

Published in 1911, A Princess of Mars introduced a popular series of novels recounting John Carter's Martian exploits. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the creator of Tarzan, employed a new style of writing that combined the genres of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. His imaginative setting - an advanced but decaying civilization in which Olympian heroics play out against malevolent forces and ever-changing fortunes - endures as a timeless world, in which love, honor, and loyalty form the basis for fast-paced romantic adventures.

    Story
"I remember reading this story but hearing it"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing could have made it better. This is a story that was written a long time ago and the constant repeating of some words over and over again shows just how archaic the writting is.

What could Edgar Rice Burroughs have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not much when you remember that he wrote this book so long ago that the language uses is now considered quaint and long out of date.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Scott Brick?

Not sure that it would matter.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I did not love the audio book that is true since it really brought out the age of the story.

    Any additional comments?

Sad to say the Mars adventure that I read as a young man almost wishing that I were Carter himself is gone. I wish it were otherwise but the story does not age well.

    "Steadily building story. Good narrator."

Between the story and the narrator, both of them rather good, it was very easy to finish this book within two days.

    Story
    "Loved it!"

Contextually when the story was written needs to be understood. So don't expect an accurate scientific account.
The story is so unexpected, exciting and written in such a refreshing fashion that I could not put it down.
    Highly imaginative, intriguing and crafted.
I would recommend to anyone looking for a good story and something to listen too and enjoy.

    Story
"A Landmark Novel, but Not a Classic"

I picked this up because I had heard that it was a landmark work of science fiction. I like scifi and adventure stories, so this seemed right up my alley. Sadly, this novel is very much a product of its times and has not aged well. The story reeks of sexism and "white man's burden," in an earnest and unreflecting way that's extremely off-putting. The protagonist is the most shameless example of a Mary Sue that I've ever seen in a serious novel. If you want to read a scifi / fantasy adventure novel, you could do far better.

"A decent story, just bot for me"

I was torn with this book. I have heard many great things about it and so I finally decided to give it a go. And in the end I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It was a story that mostly kept me interested but now that it's done I don't really have an urge to read the next in the series. Maybe I will, but not now.

    Story
"Hard to believe this story is from 1911!"

Princess of Mars might be a rather tame, run of the mill fantasy story in this day and age, but when taken in the context from when it was originally published, this story becomes all the better. Scott Brick does a terrific job narrating (as always) Burroughs grand tale of Martian love and warfare.

    "Amazing listen!"

I find it intriguing that this story was written in the early 1900's. This is the predecessor to modern sci-fi novels and it very entertaining. The speaker does an excellent job as well.

    "A classic for a reason!"

A brilliantly gripping story. Ridiculously believable, well written and the Scott Brick does really well with the performance of a "Gentleman of Virginia". A wonderful melding of historic character traits and syfy.

I saw the movie that was based on this book a while back and despite the critics panning it I really quite enjoyed it so thought I would give the audio book a go. Very enjoyable listen and I really enjoyed the readers voice. Looking forward to seeing how the story progresses 8n the next book.
