Publisher's summary

From one court, two are born...

as a new lord is crowned in glory.

But a murderer risks all their secrets...

bringing shadows that could burn everything down.

Jason Kilkenny is a quarter-human, vassal of the queen of the Fae, and the neutral arbiter of supernatural affairs around the Fae Court in the Canadian city of Calgary. He has spent half a year building relationships with the existing power structure - but all of that is thrown into chaos when the Fae leadership dictates that Calgary’s Court split into Seelie and Unseelie factions. Backed by the highest authority, the new Lord Andrell is there to build an Unseelie Court from nothing, and he will brook no interference, no challenges.

Meanwhile, a rogue Fae launches a vicious slaughter at Calgary’s largest public event, and Jason is dragged into an investigation and pursuit of a monster far more powerful than he is. The rogue’s Unseelie heritage brings him into conflict with Lord Andrell, and the city’s peace is threatened.

One wrong step could unleash civil war between the new courts, and Jason’s own secrets could lead to lighting the embers of a civil war among all Fae - embers that have slumbered since before his birth.

If only he knew what those secrets were....

Good, simple, but good

Not the deepest plot line but no worse the wear for it. Give it a read

Wow, great addition to this storyline.

I would rate it a six for story. Amazing Mr. Stewart. Maybe I should go back and reevaluate all of my previous reviews. ..

Good follow up to the 1st book

While this isn’t a difficult read it has a good premise and is fairly well written. The fight scenes help keep things lively. I will listen to the third book when it becomes available

Glynn Stewart Rarely finishes a series

this is a great book and worth the credit just be warned that he has several series out and will sometimes abandon one if he starts another that starts making more money. just a fyi.

A wonderfully entertaining story!

This is the second in the series, and a good continuance of the story. It's one of my "feel good" books, stories I turn to for comfort and escape. It's joined several of Glynn Stewart's books in that category.

I only have a couple of issues, and they're only technical issues with the performance. Alexander Trefethen's voice is AMAZING. It's warm, deep, butter-soft, and intoxicating. EXCEPT when he's trying to do an Irish accent. His Irish accent is atrocious! If he would take some time to learn a proper Irish accent, and maybe some Scots -- ok, all of the accents of Great Britain -- he'd be utterly magnificent. The swallowed vowels and resorting to an "uh" sound where he should be using an "ey" diphthong isn't terribly difficult with practice. If nothing else, listen to the Audible book of Charles Stross' "Anhillation Score", voiced by Elle Newlands, and try to learn from her delivery.

The only other issue I had with this book was a single word: Augment. Mr. Trefethen insists on adding a syllabile, making it "AUG-you-ment" instead of "AUG-ment". I wince every time I hear the extra syllable. It's maddening, and utterly correctable. The editors should have caught it and had Mr. Trefethen correct it. Heck, they should have caught the awful Irish accent, and had him correct THAT as well. This not a failing of Mr. Trefethen, it's a failing of the editorial staff that had the job of listening to it and making sure it was done WELL. They dropped the ball, and cost it a star for performance. Perhaps they will notice this review and revisit it, and have Trefethen make an updated version. (It does happen...Jim Butcher's book "Ghost Story" was redone with John Marsters, who should have done it initially but was unavailable at that time. They discovered that as well as the replacement reader had done, the fans were unhappy and required it to be redone when Marsters became available.)

Other than this, there's little I can find to complain about. Magic can answer many nitpicks in the story, so all that's left to question is performance. If the publisher has Mr. Trefethen redo it with the technical issues fixed, I will be more than happy to revisit it and correct my review.

Great characters - great story

This is an excellent installment in a new series. The characters are engaging and the story has plenty of twists and turns. The magic has lots of new facets and the hero, Jason, is someone you can really like. He has many challenges, but manages to overcome with a little help from his friends. This is a terrific series and I'm looking forward to more. The narrator is perfect and adds to the enjoyment of the tale.
