Publisher's Summary

It's the night before Hogwatch. And it's too quiet.

There's snow, there are robins, there are trees covered with decorations, but there's a notable lack of the fat man who delivers the toys...

He's gone.

Susan the governess has to find him before morning, otherwise the sun won't rise. And unfortunately her only helpers are a raven with an eyeball fixation, the Death of Rats ("the grim squeaker"), and an oh god of hangovers. Worse still, someone is coming down the chimney. This time he's carrying a sack instead of a scythe, but there's something regrettably familiar...

Ho. Ho. Ho.

It's true what they say..."You'd better watch out..."

Critic Reviews

"Discworld is more complicated and satisfactory than Oz. Truly original. Pratchett creates a brilliant excess of delectable detail!" (Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine) "The characters, the conceits, the jibes at contemporary intellectual currents are delightful." (AudioFile)
"You needn't have read Pratchett before to laugh uproariously and think seriously about the meanings of Christmas." (Amazon.com)

Perfect Pratchett

Reading The Hogfather is one of my Christmas traditions so I thought I'd download the audio version for a change. It's probably my favourite Pratchett - funny, thoughtful, wise and even moving.

Nigel Planer does a fine job. All the characters are pretty much correct (ie they sound like they do in my head) clearly differentiated.

HO! HO! HO!

Ho Ho Ho

Nigel Planer does his usual excellent job with another Discworld title. There were moments when I laughed out loud, embarrassing as I was listening on headphones, at the banter between the Death of Rats and Quoth. This was in spite of Planer's Raven sounding very like his Granny Weatherwax from other books.
He reads at the same pace as the book which, like most Pratchetts, doesn't pause for chapter breaks.
Brilliant rendition, highly recommended, and not just for Christmas.

Jolly season in Discworld! Wonderful!

Hogfather is a classic Discworld novel where Sir Terry Prachett takes you on a festive journey that you won't forget with the favourite heroes like Death, Susan, Ridcully and many more. It's one of the strongest books in the series.

If you're a Discworld fan, this book will make you laugh, give a hint of adventure and bring a swell of Christmas joy, however to fully appreciate the humour it helps if you're familiar with the main characters.

This book is a good listen for any time of the year, but it will really make the Discworld magic twinkle if you absorb the story during the festive season.

Nigel Planner again is a true chameleon of voices and his performance is strong. Compared to other books in the series I felt that the pace is slightly faster, but you can easily adjust it to your liking.

Happy Hogswatch! Ho, ho, ho...

Not my favourite

I love any TP book with DEATH in, but I struggled with this one.
Good narration, great character's, just not my favourite discworld book.

Love this story

I loved this story in print and to be able to listen to it on the move is so good.
Nigel narrates these stories well and I love the accents he uses.
He manages to impart the humour at the right points and everything flows as it should.
I will look forward to adding more Pratchetts to my collection

Great book but...

What made the experience of listening to Hogfather the most enjoyable?

Love love love this book. It's one of my favourite Discworld novels except maybe the Tiffany Aching series.

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

Nigel did a good job but I found he reads too fast. I've started listening to him at half speed and it's perfect. Didn't like his rendition of the raven character - it grated on my nerves but overall Nigel has done a sterling job.

how to inhume Father Christmas

If you could sum up Hogfather in three words, what would they be?

Christmas, fairies, governess

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

He maintains the pace very well and seems to always get meaning right in each sentance, something that some narrators seem to struggle with

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

teatime versus the Hogfather

Any additional comments?

I love the idea of the verruca fairy - gling-aling-aling!

A Discworld Delight For Christmas Listeners

The narration of Terry Pratchett's books, particularly this one, are a joy to listen to. In this brilliant addition to the series the Hogfather has gone missing and Death steps in, resulting in much mirth amid tongue-in-cheek christmas allegory.

I definitely will be listening to it again this Christmas Eve, perhaps with family or all snuggled up alone.

Not as good as Stephen Briggs

In my opinion this is TP's best Discworld novel, read brilliantly by Nigel Planer, however, after hearing some of the Discworld novels read by Stephen Briggs I find it hard to go back to Planer simply because Briggs is so great. So, in short, if you're going to spend £20 on an audio book of TP's make it a Stephen Briggs one.
