Publisher's summary

Peggy is a Torch, able to see the fire burning in each person's heart. She can follow the paths of each person's future, and know each person's most intimate secrets. From the moment of Alvin Maker's birth, when the Unmaker first strove to kill him, she has protected him. Now they are married, and Peggy is a part of Alvin's heart as well as his life. But Alvin's destiny has taken them on separate journeys. Alvin has gone north into New England, where knacks are considered witchcraft and their use is punished with death. Peggy has been drawn south, to the British Crown Colonies and the court of King Arthur Stuart in exile. For she has seen a terrible future bloom in the heartfires of every person in America, a future of war and destruction. One slender path exists that leads through the bloodshed, and it is Peggy's quest to set the world on the path to peace.

Devilish evil characters, fantastic saves by good

What did you like best about this story?

I loved listening to Verily Cooper and his rhetoric. This book was very satisfying for me, I think it might have been the best of the series so far

Which scene was your favorite?

The courtroom scenes

Speechless

The best book of the series so far. So amazing. I want this series to go on forever. The characters are beautiful and amazing. The world is so real. I cant express my feelings of this book accurately with words. Beyond great.

Great Story Line

I thought with this being the fifth book, it could not keep my attention but I was wrong and pleasantly surprised!

The story will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. There was humor, suspense and shock as the characters began to grow in their nacks and adventures.

The only thing I thought could be better was the transition with the narrators. They would sometime switch in mid story which I thought was a little confusing and unnecessary. Otherwise, great book!

Trilogies are great. More's a crowd.

Love Orson Scott Card. This series however seems to go on and on and on. And the religious undertones get more and more thick. I can't stop though. I've already started Crystal City.

another entertaining episode

Parts of this book seem a bit dark to me, slavery and witch hunting especially, but this bothers here simply because the rest feels like a balm for the soul. And the new, historical members of the cast are just plain entertaining as we see them presented by Card. Balzac and Calhoun seem more - and less - real than they are depicted in our history books. John Adams, like Daniel Webster in the previous book, is a person who can be admired or disliked depending upon the presentation. In this book, Card does the unusual and shows Adams with a sense of humor that delighted this reader. For me, it is the humor and warmth that Card finds in most of his characters that makes this series a true delight.

Wonderful

Mr.Card creates a fantastic fantastical fictitious history of America! His use of historical figures working around his narrative is unique and quite excellent! Alvin Maker is as all would hope to be, knack or no knack he gets two thumbs up from me!

I prefer to leave a rating like I could before

I prefer to leave a rating like I could before. The book was great but your rate/review system is broken. I also used to depend on this feature to show me the next book in series since your mobile app seems inexplicably unable to offer this unlike the website!

OSC, plz finish this series!

Will Card ever finish this series??? There's only one book left. I've read through this whole series 4-5 times now. It's my favorite of all his works.
I don't know whether Orson Scott Card will ever read this, but I would beg him to finish the Alvin Maker Series, which IMO is his magnum opus.

Excellent Ensemble Audiobook

If you loved the creative characters and surprise plots of Ender's Game (and series), then this American Mythology/Fantasy series is worth a go. I have been pleasantly surprised at how this whole series has recast American history with equal parts whimsy and gravity.
