Publisher's summary

Discover Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salman Rushdie's classic fantasy novel.

Set in an exotic eastern landscape peopled by magicians and fantastic talking animals, Salman Rushdie's classic children's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories inhabits the same imaginative space as The Lord of the Rings, The Alchemist, and The Wizard of Oz. In this captivating work of fantasy from the author of Midnight's Children and The Enchantress of Florence, Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way he encounters many foes, all intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers.

Great story and great story teller

I was very impressed by all of the character voices in this story. The writing was so imaginative that it inspired me to draw what I was listening to (and I am not an artist). The imagery was limitless and I’m so glad I got to experience this book through audible.

Haroun, Hooray!

I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a book designed for children more than I did this one.
Salmon Rushdie performs with charm and delight. I have recommended this book to many friends and, now, to you.

read on paper

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this reader. When I picked up the paper cooy, it was fantastic. This reading really doesn't do it justice but rather makes it sound rather silly.

A true delight

My all time favorite book. I first read it in highschool and now that my eyes make it difficult to enjoy reading I'm thrilled to have found this audio version.

Wonderful story for children and adults!

This story is a wonderful little tale spun by a master storyteller. I had no idea that Salman Rushdie could be so amusing. This is called a children’s book, but I loved it, and I am 56 years old. Narration by Neil Shah was superb!

Not my cup of tea.

I've tried to listen to this book multiple times but find myself steeped in apathy. The vocabulary is interesting but that is not enough to rescue the "Shah of Blah" from a plot that cannot hold my interest.

The narration is good enough but, without being able to finish the story I won't go higher than three stars.

I wonder if perhaps a child's imagination is required to engage with this tale?

For me it plodded along

I have never read anything by Salman Rushdie. Back in the early 90s I had almost read his controversial book, but it didn't seem so controversial and it wasn't my normal jam so I didn't bother.

When I saw this book I thought maybe I would give him a try, and I found that he still isn't my jam.

I didn't find anything in the book interesting, the characters, the writing and it was a long long slog just to get through it. I do think there are people out there that might like his books, but it is so far away from what I like that it just didn't work for me.

Ya, just not a book I found interesting, well written or even just a good waste of time for me.

Outstanding surprise!

This was my first reading of anything by Salman Rushdie. I’m sorry I’ve kept myself from this pleasure until now!

I had no idea of his wit, the gems of humor, human nature observations, delightful turns of phrasing I would find on nearly every page! I found the stories-within-stories to be refreshing, thought provoking in their humor, irony and clever words choices. I loved the characters and, the narration was superb — one of the best of the hundreds of narrators I’ve now heard. I’ll read/listen to more of Rushdie and look for more narration by Neil Shah! Pure pleasure!
