When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the '60s into one enduring archetype.

Story
In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Gone. Except for the young. There are teens, but not one single adult. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no Internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what's happened. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents - unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers - that grow stronger by the day. It's a terrifying new world.

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

It starts with the dogs. They won’t stop barking. And then the earth shrugs - 8.9 on the Richter scale. It’s the world’s biggest earthquake since Lisbon in 1755, and it doesn’t hit California or Japan or Mexico, but New Madrid, Missouri, a sleepy town on the Mississippi River. Seismologists had predicted the scope of the disaster - but no one listened. For hundreds of miles around, dams burst, engulfing entire counties in tidal waves of mud and debris. Within minutes, there is nothing but chaos and ruin from St. Louis to Vicksburg, from Kansas City to Louisville.

I love this book. it is simple and straight forward with no interweaving thousand character narration. From it though comes so much of what makes modern sci-fi/cyberpunk. story is great narration perfect. Easily a top sci-fi book.

This is Cyberpunk!
This book is the other side of Neuromancer. A mated pair and together they define a genre for nerd and punks and gamers. Wow! What brilliant and sad characters and brought to life so well by a fine narrator who was subtle enough to be a man a woman a Russian a hick. This is now in my top 3 Audiobooks along with Plagueis and Frankenstein. Listen to this one you won’t be disappointed.

Great listen
I try to keep an open mind when listening to a book and then I’m not going to lie the pacing of this one almost had me not listen to the rest of it but it actually did catch up pretty well. There are some descriptive parts that I think could have been left out and you’ll know when you hear them but overall a great not so out of this world story!
