Publisher's Summary

In the last years of the Forerunner empire, chaos rules. The Flood - a horrifying shape-changing parasite - has arrived in force, aided by unexpected allies. Internal strife within the ecumene has desperately weakened Forerunner defenses.

Too little, too late, the legal rate of Juridicals is only now investigating possible crimes by the Master Builder and others. Evidence-gathering agents known collectively as Catalog have been dispatched to collect testimony from the Librarian and both Didacts: the Ur-Didact, treacherously abandoned in a Flood-infested system, and the Bornstellar Didact, who accompanies the Librarian as she preserves specimens against the dire possibility of Halo extermination.

Facing the imminent collapse of their civilization, the Librarian and the Ur-Didact reveal what they know about the relationship between the long-vanished Precursors and the Flood. The Precursors created many technological species, including humanity and the Forerunners. But the roots of the Flood may be found in an act of enormous barbarity, carried out beyond our galaxy 10 million years before.... Because of that barbarism, a greater evil looms. Only the Ur-Didact and the Librarian - husband and wife pushed into desperate conflict - hold the keys to a solution. Facing the consequences of a mythic tragedy, one of them must now commit the greatest atrocity of all time - to prevent an insane evil from dominating the entire universe.

The forerunner story has come full circle.

This a great prequel story to the Halo saga. Questions about how it all started and the ultimate purpose of everything is contained in this book.
This is a must read for all Halo fans and it sets the stage for all the games. I am now looking forward to what happens next in Halo 5.

Fantastic backstory filler for Halo 4

If you could sum up Halo: Silentium in three words, what would they be?

I wish this would have come out before Halo 4. So many questions were answered in this book that I had during game play. Occasionally frustrated by getting lost in so many multiple story lines.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No single favorite.

Have you listened to any of Euan Morton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

There were sentences that felt like they were ready by another person and then went back to normal again. Couldn't understand that.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Sigh of relief with more understanding

Any additional comments?

I have no idea how Greg, Microsoft, or 343 Industries is going to go deeper or further in the Halo saga, but I can't wait to find out.

A true to life Forerunner history book.

Some people write that the author slurs some letters in his words, this is to stick to the Forerunner Model of speech which I am sure is VERY difficult. I don't know if he does it in other books, but to the casual listener it's not that bad. If you have an Audible account, and LOVE Halo, give it a try. It is VERY difficult to fully understand, but the lore is spot on and the book top notch, I returned it because I think that the hard copy will probably be easier to dissertian. The narrator does his best, and for the regular listener (whether you read the first two or not), this is a good book.

Oooooh thats why i read this series

I literally cant remember the first 4 hours of this book. Thats probably due to its confusing and convoluted writing style. But then after the librarian went to that weird area with the old lady I started to understand whats happening in the plot. The last 3 hours of the book were really exiting. But there was an issue with plot logic. In the last parts of the war there were very very fast moving from location to location for unknown reasons it felt like you could simplify it. Also i wish the forerunners were a little cooler than a bunch of politically corrupt dicks. Im also really confused about what the 3rd halo firing did actually. Like in the games it seems like firing a halo means that life will be wiped out but halo 07 means it will shoot some beam that will tickle a little bit. Also i don’t understand how the humans survived the firing of the halo, or how the flood did not rush to earth. Very convoluted. The title is a reference to the set up of the events of the halo games. I eventually want a halo game where we get to play as Chakas in the 2nd book.

Great story ties perfectly into the rest of Halo

really enjoyed the forerunner series, I think this book is probably the best of all 3 with 1 a close 2nd.

there's a few loose ends that don't get tied up at the end and that is bothering me.

Own the book, but wanted it read to me

There were noticeable edits and re-recordings added into the narration. This would interrupt the flow of the story, and the voice work.

An intriguing conclusion to the Forerunner saga

The book is filled with incredible lore, and the performance - though a little monotonous at the very beginning - was overall very good.

Not the best

Story is ok but the performance is a slog to get through. I think this is because of the tone of the characters being quite deadpan.

A great conclusion to the trilogy

The story begins relatively slow but dives into great details about the forerunners and sets up the future of the halo games with far more in depth background but also paying respect to the first halo games.
Well written, brilliantly performed and shockingly entertaining.
A great conclusion to a trilogy.

Good buy!!

So there has been few weak books in the halo series all of which is highly recommended if your into the games, but the forerunners trilogy I enjoyed alot must admit. Book 2 of forerunners was ok but this picks it up and leaves you wanting more. Only giving this the 4/5 'cause at parts the narration got little bit annoying.. For me for those that have listened to this I'm sure can agree, still good buy if you want to learn of the history of the forerunners!

Great finale

Don't write reviews nor do I listen to many audio books but this series was amazing, ups and downs through this book but I would definitely recommend for the very well written story (in my opinion) and definitely for the conclusion. I ended up really liking the narrator and felt it easy to listen to. Shame there are no more forunner books as these were excellent, guess I'll start listening to some of the 26th century books now.

Just not interested

What disappointed you about Halo: Silentium?

Off shoot of the halo series. I have read the previous two books that made me think twice about buying this one. As a fan of Halo I felt compelled to buy this. I listened to this dull uneventful story wasting hours of my life that I will not get back again.

Would you ever listen to anything by Greg Bear again?

Ok I have done the 3 halo books, that is more than any mortal can be expected to stand. NO is the answer.

How could the performance have been better?

Ask Karen Travis to write the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Utter emptiness, nobody will ever make a video game of this vacuous tale.

Any additional comments?

It simply does deserve further commment

Pretty good for Halo fans

A good finale but perhaps not best suited to audio book, was a bit confusing at times and jumped around a lot. His voice was pleasant but wasn't really distinct enough between characters so that also added to the confusion. Tied up some loose ends so worth a read if you're a halo fan
