Publisher's summary

If you want to hear voices from the dead in Nekros City, you call Alex Craft. She's a grave witch with reasonable rates and extraordinary powers who specializes in revealing the secrets of the dead. But she has her own secrets. She's not human, and her newly discovered heritage is causing havoc for her both in the human realm and in Faerie. Fae can't survive without a tie to Faerie, and now that Alex's true nature has awoken, she's no exception. She must align herself to a court - and soon.

To retain as much freedom as possible, she makes a deal to track the source of a new glamour-infused street drug that causes hallucinations that kill - and not just the user. Alex's investigation entangles her in a conflict brewing in Faerie, and she must find answers before she's dragged so deep that she loses not only her freedom but her life.

Eh, okay but stagnant

This was an okay continuation of the Alex Craft series. I was very excited to read this book since I was loving this series back in 2013 when I read it. Maybe it's because it's been so long between books (4 years is an incredibly huge gap between books) but has I had tough time engaging with the story and characters.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was decent. I am not a huge fan of the narrator’s voice, but she does a good job of distinguishing between characters voices and of conveying emotion, so I don’t really have any strong complaints.

As in previous books Alex continues to run herself ragged; this time her big issue is that she is fading because of not being part of any faerie court (or being declared independent). This leaves her exhausted and sick. Additionally there is a new drug on the streets called Glitter which seems to have it’s origins in faerie and is causing the deaths of a number of humans; so she gets involved in tracking that down.

I just felt like the story was a bit stagnant. Alex finds yet another way to delay making any decisions about her ties to faerie. The love triangle between her, Death, and Falin continues without any progress. Death is in the story only a very small bit and, although Falin is in the story more, Falin and Alex are trying to distance themselves from each other.

The whole plotline of having a faerie drug wreaking havoc in the human world has been done before. The first urban fantasy series that comes to mind is Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series, in that series there is a book about Goblin Fruit being sold as a drug to humans. There are have other urban fantasies that have used similar plotlines as well. The plotline for this book just feels very unoriginal.

Overall it’s an okay book but in the end I just mostly wanted the story to be over. There isn’t a lot of progress made in the over arcing story and the contained mystery Alex is dealing with feels like something I’ve read about many times before. The characters felt stagnant as did the world and story and I had a lot of trouble staying engaged. I have felt like this about a few other urban fantasy series right now (Chicagoland Vampires, Elemental Assassins) which makes me wonder if I am just burnt out on the genre. However I have still been enjoying both the Incryptid series and the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire as well as the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews...so maybe there are just a lot of urban fantasy series that are kind of fizzling right now. I don’t plan on reading anymore of this series because I just don’t care about the world or the characters any more.

Outstanding!!

I have been waiting forever for this book and I was not disappointed. The characters are still rich and engaging. The plot is well developed and engrossing. I started listening to this book in the morning and finished it by night. I can't wait for the next book. I hope there won't be another 4 year wait.

Complicated and Messy... just how I like my drama!

This was an excellent addition to the Alex Craft series... The last two books gave us some background on our main characters, so this book had an opportunity to put all its focus on the story. Best story she had so far. In this book, humans are taken a drug called GLITTER that was made by fairies. It literally makes your dreams come true. But all dreams aren't good. Nightmares began to terrorize and kill the towns people. Alex, who can't stay out of trouble falls knee deep into the drama. I really enjoyed this book. Everything is Alex's professional life is extremely complicated and her love life is soap opera messy. Good reading.

Slight spoilers below...

I do still have questions around the fact the Alex has a castle in Fairy that she has never entered. She needs to visit fairy on occasion for health reasons. why not chill in her castle for a day? No one even knows she owns it yet. Also, if Rhianna is her "servant" and has lived in Fairy over 100 years... then why not learn more about Fae by asking her? She she get all the gossip available. Duh! She keeps fumbling around with these courts because she is not sure how to act or who the key people are... why not ask your servants who over over a century old?.

Good addition to a fun and relaxing series.

For anyone already reading the series, enjoy.

For everyone else, head over to the first in the series. These books are fun, the characters are good, and the story is easy to follow without being easy to predict.

Pretty Good

A vast improvement from the third installment!

Although Alex isn't my favorite protagonist urban fantasy protagonist (mostly because she's not ready for romantic commitments and feels obligated to be in one, which is ultimately going to set everyone up for some pain and sadness) she's consistent and sticks to her morals. I do like that in her. I also like finding out more about her heritage, even though I miss when the series was focused more on Grave Magic rather than Fae business.

Anyway, I've gotten this far. I like the characters (both love interests have it hard, man) and like Alex's friends when they aren't blaming her for everything under the sun. I'm sure to continue the series to see this through.

Author very repetitive with information

Narrator is very good with voices, expressive and easy to listen to. The author's writing on the other hand is okay. The series of books could be a good story however Price repeats the same explanation of certain things over and over again in every book. My brain is saying "I've heard this a million times already, I know I know". The main character is also made out to be an idiot at times with poor decisions. The series has gotten very frustrating.

Alex Craft is Fun

I am enjoying this series because it is fun. The characters are not terribly deep. The main character is given clues to the problem, however I can figure things out before she does, which is not my preference.
The Universe the writer creates is interesting and she introduced new species slowly. It is not challenging to grasp. The stories are wrapped around mystery deaths, usually pretty graphically described. Not a teen book.
