Publisher's summary

If society collapsed, could you survive?

When Morgan Carter's car breaks down 250 miles from his home, he figures his weekend plans are ruined. But things are about to get much, much worse: The country's power grid has collapsed. There is no electricity, no running water, no Internet, and no way to know when normalcy will be restored - if it ever will be.

An avid survivalist, Morgan takes to the road with his prepper pack on his back. During the grueling trek from Tallahassee to his home in Lake County, chaos threatens his every step but Morgan is hell-bent on getting home to his wife and daughters - and he'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Fans of James Wesley Rawles, William R. Forstchen's One Second After, and The End by G. Michael Hopf will revel in A. American's apocalyptic tale.

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Loved it!

What a great book! For those of us out there that enjoy a good SHTF novel...this is a good one. Not as good as One Second After in my opinion, but still a very good book. This one was a little different from a lot of the others in that the story follows a few people as they attempt to get home after everything falls apart. They are stranded a few hundred miles form home and the journey to get home is what this book is about.

I think that some of the situations, and the short amount of time it takes for society to completely degrade, might be a little bit of a stretch...but then again, who knows. We, as a society, MUST spend some time and make plans for how we are going to handle these kinds of possible scenarios. The thing that I really like about these kind of books, is that IT COULD REALLY HAPPEN! When you read this book, it's almost like you are reading a self-help book. I love to take the situations that the characters are put into and think about how I would handle them. Would I do something different....would I be able to, emotionally or physically, do what needs to be done. It is something that I think about a lot, and personally prepare for. LOVE IT!

The narrator also did a fine job. Great, consistent characterization and voicing. This one is a winner!

for the love of Pete its a SHOTGUN not a shotty!!!

Very good book. Well worth a credit and the time to listen.

A bit gear focused, like it should be.

Society collapse and .gov going full new world order was a bit quicker than expected.

Shoot outs are believable.

If 95% of cars are not running should be plenty of gasoline available - hello garden hose and siphon ...

In all a very good book though

Great Audible Experience

Chris Weatherman is a great writer. Reading this, the first book in his series was great. Duke Fontaine's narration brought it to the next level. I can't wait to download the next book!

Loved this whole series.

Where does Going Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best.

What did you like best about this story?

I have been a camper all my life and I enjoyed all the details of what & how he used each item in his pack or things he found on his journey. Good practical information. The author really made me care whether Morgan, Thad & Jess made it home or not. I've listened to the whole series 3 times now. Really enjoyed it.

What does Duke Fontaine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Duke Fontaine brings the characters to life with small changes in his voice. I could always tell who was speaking just from his voice. Good job.

Down to earth, yet fantastic, and realistic.

If you're anything like me, you've got a bit of a prepper side, so I read this book as research, more than for it's plot - until I got a few pages into it. The writer has a great knack for describing the human condition. Within a few chapters, you can relate to Morgan, put yourself in his shoes, and find yourself pulling for him as he endures the struggle to get home in one piece in a world gone mad.

Is it a good book for the Gear Junkie too? Absolutely, but if you care nothing about that part of the novels, the series is great on its own as a piece of wonderful post-modern America. The characters are deep; the situations dire; and the possibilities all too possible.

I read the Patriots book, and of course One Second After as well - both leaders in this genre. I can say without a doubt that A. American has surpassed both in my eyes as a leader in this field of literature.

I'm into book three now, about to start book four, and so far I can't make myself put them down. Try this series out. You'll be hooked!

Enjoyable book.

Good storyline (although I'm not a fan of the author's decision to make the US Federal government the bad guys).

Good development with all major characters, although he's oddly sparse on the main character's background & how he development the many combat & survival skills he displays. Simply being an avid outdoorsman seems pretty weak.

I like the author's style of being detailed in the descriptions of relevant actions, tools/gear used & adding the extra dialog w/characters regarding that action or choice of gear which gives an added depth... HOWEVER, the author detracts from that "positive" by being overly descriptive about totally irrelevant / cursory actions or in describing gear/ tools used by minor characters in peripheral scenarios. Gets to be a bit much.

Overall though, I thought it was a good book & worth the money.
