Publisher's Summary

When the Locust Horde burst from the ground 15 years ago to slaughter the human population of Sera, mankind began a desperate war against extinction. Now, after a decade and a half of bloody fighting, and with billions dead, the survivors - the Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, along with a small band of civilians - have been forced to destroy their own cities and sacrifice their entire civilization to halt the Locust advance. The last-ditch measures have succeeded, but at an enormous cost: the survivors have been reduced to a handful of refugees. Escaping to a haven on the remote island of Vectes, they begin the heartbreaking task of rebuilding their devastated world.

For a while, there’s hope... making peace with old enemies, and once again planning for the future. But the short respite is shattered when Vectes comes under siege from an even deadlier force than the Locust: the Lambent, a hideous and constantly mutating life-form that destroys everything in its path. As the Lambent’s relentless assault spreads from the mainland to the island, the refugees finally understand what drove the Locust from their underground warrens and sparked the global war.

While Marcus Fenix and the Gears struggle to hold back the invasion, the Coalition faces a stark choice - fight this new enemy to the last human, or flee to the wastelands to take their chances and live like the human pariahs known as the Stranded... even as Coalition Chairman Richard Prescott still guards one last, terrible secret about the Locust, the Lambent, and the future of mankind.

These books are great!

If your a fan of the series and games you'll like this. The books really flesh out the characters and get a much better sense of who they are as compared to the games. The whole series of books takes place before or in between the games. The only thing that frustrates me about these books is that they seem to raise more questions rather than answer them. Hopefully Gears of War 3 will offer a whole lot of answers and closure.

Solid story telling, Excellent narrator

Great addition to the Karen Travis's arsenal. She has a powerful command of the world gone to hell genre. David Colacci does her stories proud on narration.

fills in a lot of holes in the story

this fills in mainly what happens between Gears of War 2 and 3. there's a lot of flashbacks around edai that gives you more perspective on all of the characters. great book if you're really into Gears of War.

what a way to ruin a story.

the narrator is terrible and boring. I couldn't focus on the story for more than 30 seconds without losing interest. His voice was God awful I really wish I could have return this book.

Love the Gears books

I've been a huge fan of the games since they first came out and am now reading the books. I LOVE the filling in of time between the games by the books. The character ls I already loved now have more depth to them and make me appreciate them more. Of you're a Gears fan, these books are a must read/listen.

Filling In The Gaps

Its nice to get answers as to what happens between games, without signing off for a spin-off. I can't say much other than the obvious. I love the Gears universe and I love these books. The narrator is also a pleasure to listen to, especially on a stressful day.

Absolutely Fantastic

A brilliant way to begin the 3rd game of the series. There was so much back story and information in this book (and the other titles) that I found myself replaying the games from the beginning. Karen Traviss is an excellent writer and a fantastic story teller.
David Colacci is such a wonderful narrator that I actually prefer his interpretation of certain characters, over their voice actors in game.
