Publisher's summary

Earth's Star Force Marines invade an alien world!

In the second book of the Star Force series, Kyle Riggs has another bad year. The Nano ships have a new mission - one that sentences their pilots to death. Meanwhile, the governments of Earth want to steal Star Force's Nano technology for their own. Worst of all, Earth has made a promise to the Macros, and the machines are coming to collect.

Extinction is the story of Earth's entry into an interstellar war between living creatures and machines. And to buy the peace, we've signed up with the machines.

15 words? Well, let me see. I liked this series. It was well above average. Action packed, fast moving, and very cool. I bought the series and went book by book. I am glade I did.

Wow awesome Great story and builds well

If you could sum up Extinction in three words, what would they be?

Learn, build, conquer!

What did you like best about this story?

Not just one thing i can say i liked. The plot is great, the addition of programming and logic (which i suck at) makes this story so much more interesting. The way the story grows makes it an instant classic for me.

Which character – as performed by Mark Boyett – was your favorite?

Kyle Riggs is my favorite character because he's got usuable intelligence and he's pretty funny too.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not in this book, but in the first book because of what happened to his family.

Any additional comments?

Great listen, and it builds up well.

Fast paced and gritty.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you like old school action where the main character kicks butt and gets the girl, this is probably a good series for you. If you're looking for complex characters, dialogue, or scientific theory, you might want to save your credit.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

If "Swarm: Star Force, Book 1" picked you up and wouldn't put you down, "Extinction: Star Force, Book 2" will inject you with Nanos. V.B. Larson does a great job of creating a world where action is king, and one suicidal man is just crazy enough to try filling the leading role. This is a fast paced, fun read that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's sprinkled with science, space, and tech, but keeps things flowing.

Great series so far

Would you listen to Extinction again? Why?

I find this book as good if not better then the first one. Where I thought the first one was a little slow in the beginning, this one picks up from the first with non stop action.

Really good Sci-Fi

I don't love all science fiction writers and book. The ones that I do tend to be some of my favorites, though. This is a fantastic book. Excellent writing, interesting story, and amazing narration. I can't wait to get to the next book in the series!

a very nice ride

This book took me over two months to finish listening to. I've been so busy that I couldn't devote the time I wanted. I usually finish these in less than a week. the takeaway there, the reason I mention it at all, is that it's a strong enough book that it heald my attention so long. much of that is owed to the narrator.

Love the story idea, tired of main characters

He loves to sell himself as "I did" versus his team and We. Yet when it starts he whines they will probably blame me... Uhm well yeah you made that decision alone. Then there's Sandra... Purely a whiner and no value to the story. Plus things like kissy face and rubbing groins while in military training or other not appropriate times... Really? It isn't sexy just stupid. The rest of your troops don't have their girlfriends along. If the author would have stuck with pure scifi and not tried to force romance in I would have continued the series. But can't stomach more of the main characters.

Superpowered marines in space.

Fun story with a superhero guy that can do it all.

Pretty good space battles and the nanos are fun.

Disappointing for a sequel

In the the first Star Force, Larson created a credible tale of unknown alien technology and AIs sent to Earth to assist in a battle against a machine intelligence ready to invade and conquer. Our intrepid hero, Kyle Riggs saved the day by deciphering the alien technology and developing various successful attack modes. In the end, Kyle negotiated a truce with the promise of thousands of nano-enhanced human soldiers fighting as mercenaries for their previous enemy.

In the latest installment, Kyle must first deal with Earth governments that now with the removal of the alien threat, have decided to return to their historical roles of infighting. Kyle is determined to fulfill his duty of human mercenaries and proceeds to build an army.

Rather than attempt to double-cross the aliens, Kyle leads this army into battle against an unknown planet in an unknown star system with worm-like intelligent life. There is much musing and philosophical hand wringing about biota fighting biota, rather than teaming up to battle the machines, but Kyle has dug himself such a deep hole, he has little choice but to practice genocide on the first biological alien species that Earth encounters.

Overall, the battles are boring and mundane with a totally unsatisfying ending. Traveling through wormholes to stab a worm is hardly the stuff of interstellar sci-fi battles. It's likely that Kyle will return to an even more messed up Earth with the only conclusion that both machine and human intelligence are not fit for existence in the universe.

If there is a book 3, the universe would be better if the machines took over and put Kyle out of his and readers' misery.
