Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - One of our most highly-rated books of all-time, Ender’s Game isn’t just a sci-fi novel for kids. From an early age, Ender must tackle the adult concepts of leadership, independence and self-reliance, abstract thinking, and accountability. It helps that he’s a genetically engineered super-genius, but still, that’s a lot to ask a kid to handle. The multi-cast narration adds layers of texture to the diverse characters throughout. —Chris

Publisher's Summary

Now a Major Motion Picture. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Is Ender the general Earth so desperately needs? The only way to find out is to throw him into ever-harsher training at Battle School, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when his training begins. He will grow up fast.

But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. His two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Among the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

This Special 20th Anniversary Edition of the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning classic is now digitally remastered with a full cast production. It also contains an exclusive bonus: an original postscript written and recorded by the author himself, Orson Scott Card!

    "loved it"

I'd not heard of the author or the series before selecting this. It was wonderfully creative and enjoyable.

    "Everything sci-fi should be"

I'm three quarters through this book, and I'm enthralled. It is everything a sci-fi novel should be: intense, intelligent, and above all, human. The main characters are wonderfully developed, particluarly Ender, whose internal conflict is one of the main themes of the story.

The audio presentation is excellent, with different narrators presenting different sections, depending on which character's point of view is predominant. I generally don't like dramatizations, and there is some dramatic license taken in some of the narration, but I think it works in this case. Very well read by all the narrators.

I am about to buy all the books in this series. If they are 1/10th as good as this one, it's money well spent.

    "Riveting and thought provoking"

An absolute joy to listen to. The storyline was so well thought out and riveting that I could hardly put it down. The author's character development and their interaction was thoughtful and provocative. I was so caught up in Ender's trials that the ending surprised even me. While the result is fairly predictable, that manner in which he takes you there is not. An excellent read.

    "Favourite audiobook thus far"

Narration and story are both amazing. It's a science fiction book but you don't have to be a science fiction fan to appreciate it. What makes this book so great is the character development.

    "Card's Masterpiece"

Card's story of a boy who saves the earth is a must for all youth. This reading of the story was well performed and produced. The use of mulitple readers was an added bonus to provide a wider variety of voices to the presentation. Highly recommended.

    "Great story, fine audio"

This really is a GREAT story. It attracted me to sci-fi in the first place. I loved listening to this also, but i kinda wish that they had a kid read it (at least the parts of the kids). It was harder in the audio version to understand everything from the kids point of view when it's a much older man reading the part. Also, it's harder to fully grasp and understand the more technical parts in the story than when I was reading it.

Overall, I recommend that you actually read this first, but if you are not able to, the audio will do fine. I REALLY enjoyed this.

    "Outstanding! Outstanding! Outstanding!"

Very well written and the readers were fabulous. I became so captivated by the story of Ender, that I wanted more when the book was over. Fortunately there are three other books in the series. The next book, Speaker for the Dead was good, but not as good as this one. It took so long for Ender to reappear, that I kept thinking, "where's Ender!" I can't say enough about how fun this book was to read!

    "Wonderful"

Incredibly well thought out and written story with exactly the right amount of characterisation and emotion to maintain the focus of the story. Although set in a science fiction environment, this story is about people and their actions in the widest possible context and will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a good story.

This (and the others in the Ender series) is one of the best read (and in parts acted) audible books I've enjoyed.

    "Amazing"

What I love best about this book is how it illustrates the futility of war. I enjoyed the resolution and everything before it. Wonderfully written and performed.
