Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

In a blink, I found myself in an unknown land, greeted by the textbox of an unfriendly system. It wanted me to become a great hero, save the world, win the love of the people and all that crap. But this new world already had a hero. Why should I bust my ass and deal with dragons and the unknown for people I didn't know? Let him deal with that. It's his job! So instead of being tempted by the system's nonsense, I chose a simple class. Potion maker. I wasn't interested in cultivating mana and defying the heavens, courting death, none of that crap.

Life’s tough when you’re trapped in an eight-year-old body on another world. His name is Eight. Not really, but that’s what the System decided after a slip of the tongue. One moment, he was stepping out the office door on the way home, and the next waking up on a hillside below a town wall. Oh, and the gate guard drove him off, because he thought Eight was a monster. What’s a boy to do in a world full of magic and so many, many hungry creatures searching for their next meal? Well, there’s an old man inside that body, and he'll use everything he’s learned to survive.

Great series!
Over seventeen hours of fun! This book has everything! Humor, horror, romance, action, magic, vampires and mythical creatures. I did think it was going to be an adult Harry Potter when he started describing the university, but I'm glad I kept listening. It's not actually anything like Harry Potter other than the magic. I've read Harry Potter rip-offs, and this isn't one. It's very well written and creative. There are wizards, vampires, shifters, and fae. The narrator did a great job with the many different characters. I look forward to the next book!

A long and crazy ride
Any additional comments?
A fantastic listen. This story covers a tremendous amount of ground with vampires, wizards, faerie, dragons, medieval, etc... The narrator does a perfect job, can't imagine anyone else doing this character. This is a long story with lots of twist and turns, a likable cast, and an imperfect main character. Can't wait for the next book!

Wish more were available
I just finished this and normally I like to think a little more on the book. However I was extremely happy with the universe that Rain Oxford has created. The story moved well and I was never bored. The only thing I did not like was that the pace of the narration sometimes did not allow me to enjoy the wit built in to the story. I found myself laughing or having my own inner dialogue on the characters only to have to rewind because I missed something. When James Marsters reads a book I feel
Like I have time to enjoy the story, this was just a little to fast. Don't get me wrong the narrator did a phenomenal job, and you will enjoy his telling of the story.
I look forward to books three through five making it to audible.

Wish the reader was different
I am giving this a 4 rating because the story was actually pretty good. The reader did a good job of differentiating all the different characters but the fatal flaw was the main character. We are told that he is in his early thirties but he sounds like he is in his late fifties. Gave me the feeling of an older cop as opposed to a younger P.I. I think most readers give the main characters their own voices and perhaps this is what Todd did (I've never listened to anything he has read before). However, the deep voice just didn't mesh with the character. The whole time I was listening I just kept thinking how great this would be if ready by Luke Daniels or someone. Also, the main character just sort of became powerful all of a sudden. Maybe a little slower pace would have been good. I feel like maybe I'm not being really helpful here but these are my thoughts. Again, not a bad listen but also not one of my favorites.

I should have known better.
I was hopeful, after all the good reviews on this, that it would work for me. It started out both interesting and innovative, and I was quite delighted. The reader, I thought, was funny. He makes the main character very over-the top tough, dark, and grim like a noir detective. I liked it because it worked ok for the character, and he did all right with the other characters, though the opposite sex characters were't the best they were fine. My problem came with the introduction of a couple of animals. I should have known right away to put the book down and leave it alone, but it had been going so well, I thought the writer was creative and innovative enough to avoid falling into the tedious, inevitable trap of killing off an animal character in order to demonstrate the evil of a human (ish) character. Sadly, this was not so. I admit I stopped reading once the inevitable and predictable happened, so I have rated the book as an overall three stars, since I have no option not to rate it and yet did not hear the whole thing, and I wanted to write a review for persons who love supernatural stories (like me) but without using the death of an animal as a stupid crutch to move the plot forward.
