Publisher's summary

A computer-hacking teen. The girl who wants to save him. And a rogue mirror reflection that might be the death of them both.

In private, 17-year-old Brandon hacks bank accounts just for the thrill of it. In public, he looks like any other tattooed bad boy with a fast car and devil-may-care attitude. He should know: he's worked hard to maintain that façade. With inattentive parents who move constantly from city to city, he's learned not to get tangled up in things like friends and relationships. So he'll just keep living like a machine, all gears and wires.

Then two things shatter his carefully-built image: Emma, the kind, stubborn girl who insists on looking beneath the surface - and the small matter of a mirror reflection that starts moving by itself. Not only does Brandon's reflection have a mind of its own, but it seems to be grooming him for something - washing the dye from his hair, yanking out his piercings, swapping his black shirts for... pastels. Then it tells him: it thinks it can live his life better, and it's preparing to trade places. And when it pulls Brandon through the looking-glass, not only will he need all his ill-gotten hacking skills to escape, but he's going to have to face some hard truths about who he's become. Otherwise he'll be stuck in a digital hell until he's old and gray, and Emma and his parents won't even know he's gone.

Liked it

I wasn't sure what this was going to be about when I first started listening. It felt a bit like a teen romance novel, but once the story started rolling, I enjoyed it.

A true, unique story

Where does Duplicity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's right up there next to Mark Tufo as far as writing ability and story. I can't wait for the follow on.. pretty please... you left it open, Traver...

What other book might you compare Duplicity to and why?

Rewinder, looper, While it's not about time travel, the story type and writing style are very similar. I was actually unsure of each turn and twist, which is uncommon for me.

Which scene was your favorite?

the back had at the dinner table and the excuse used was hilarious.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When a certain person finally admitted love. We all knew it was there and hoping it would finally be mentioned... sadly under the circumstances it was forced, but none the less said.

Any additional comments?

Traver is an amazing author. I hope I see more published.

Fantastic

One of the best tech thrillers I have listened to yet, and I have listened to many.

I suspended disbelief

I was delighted with this young adult novel. The male narrator's portrayal of female voices was occasionally stereotypical, but didn't affect the storytelling.

Matrix

A bit too The Matrix for me, but that does not make it a bad book, just personal preference. It is a cyber-thriller after all, so I upped it to a middle-of-the-road rating. I didn't like that half of the characters aren't really fleshed-out and instead are just 2-dimensional cardboard cutouts. On the other hand, there are a couple of characters that were well-drawn and I became invested in them. All in all it was alright.

I finished it. I was underwhelmed.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was time spent. Was it time spent well? Meh. It gave me something to listen to in the car. It wasn't the worst Audible ever by any means, but there were just SO many holes in the story and it just wasn't for me. I enjoy the computer/hacker/tech geek novels typically but there wasn't enough interesting things happening. I also think that the fact that the characters were all so unlikable added to the fact greatly.

Disliked. Every. Single. Character. Not being able to give a rat's a** about them really ruined the book for me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting thing was the "jail." Without giving away spoilers, it was an interesting concept that could have been explored a lot more in depth. As it was, you only touched the surface and got an overall summary of what it was.

The least interesting aspect of the story? The characters themselves. Just so mediocre.

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He didn't bring anything spectacular to the story.Unlike some of the other reviews, I didn't mind his female character voices, although they weren't overly convincing. Listen to "The Martian." There's some spectacular narration that add to the story in a huge way.

Do you think Duplicity needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I do think it needs a follow up book. There seem to be enough fans of the book that I feel it would do well. I won't be one of those people purchasing the book, but I definitely feel that they could take the story further.

Wow. What a surprise.

I bought this book as a daily special, so I got it on sale. It would have been unfortunate if it had never crossed my path.

While it wasn't my standard romance, there was an underlying romantic theme in the story that was very sweet and tragic.

It is a cautionary big brother is watching everything you do and you better watch out. Kinda story with some really interesting twists and turns that I enjoyed.

Fun, entertaining

If you're a fan of Tron you would probably enjoy this book. Lots of twists and turns. Of course Macleod Andrews is a fabulous narrator. And, no bad language or explicit sex or violence.
