Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: This full-cast recording of Dune succeeds in every way the now-infamous movie version failed. The alien landscapes emerge in your imagination, while the complex plot lines and complicated relationships gain clarity. Through the talents of a marvelous voice cast, which includes Scott Brick and Simon Vance, Dune sheds the daunting burden of its epic richness - and becomes a powerful story of personal conflict and heroism. Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

    "Different is good"

it was very different to have so many voice actors reading this book but it was great to see how it helped shape the individuals thought processes that Frank Herbert put into his work

"Great book and performance, with minor issues"

First, the book itself is, of course, fantastic.

The performance overall is also great. The majority of the book is narrated by a single author, with smaller parts acted out by a larger cast. These parts are interspersed throughout the book, and add a lot of great color to the story. Some of them even employ sound effects with great success.

While both the narrator and the cast are independently really great, the one minor issue comes into play when the narrator also makes up voices for the characters. Thus you have the Baron speak in a deep sonorous American accent during the cast segments, and speak in a dignified English-ish accent during the narration. Most of the time that's fine, but it does become a little confusing during some parts of the book, when many characters are talking in a single scene.

    Overall, however, highly recommended!

It just didn't capture me. I'm coming off modern sci fi pieces like Red Rising and Three Body Problem. Dune fell short.

"Sounds like they combined 2 audiobooks"

About 1/3 of the story is told by different voice actors (some with less than stellar microphones) portraying each character. The rest is done fantastically in a classic audiobook reading format. I don't know why it is split up like this, but it makes for a distracting experience. Great story though.

Story is good, but narrators were exchanged, sometimes mid-scene, for no apparent reason. Overall great.

"An preluding tale to larger worlds"

Dune is an epic tale of off-world activities and commerce that make you ponder the our own small universe. However, Dune is not about the large expanses, but the stratagem of one pilot and its existence.

The story is detailed and builds character development well. The performance is lacking at time, but the desire the learn what happens next will keep you interested

    "Great performance"

Well there is not much more to say about Dune. It is one of the best epic sci-fi ("fantasy") colossus which was written and it is basically must-read now for any fantasy fan and for good reasons. Regarding audiobook quality I enjoyed it quite much. Some of the scenes were more like theatre performance with different actors for different characters but another were performed by mainly one narrator. This was also one of greatest weakness as it was a little bit disturbing to hear baron shift his voice from his great bass voice into commons baryton in next scene. But still five stars from me.
