NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Listened in anticipation of the movie

I went ahead an listen to this because the movie trailer left me wondering what this movie would even be about.
This book is pretty hard to describe, definitely not what I expect but it's an awesome story highly recommend. Excited to see how well it'll be translated into film!

The review you need to read

The book and is truly a classic, generating a cult like following due to the intricate world that Frank Herbert has built. The story is magnificently written with detailed storytelling, so you can see how a character is perceiving and feeling. So interesting how Herbert works science into his writing, yet still describes fighting scenes to elegantly.

The audiobook is well read and done with a cast of readers (which is different that the single narrator had been used to). I actually really enjoyed the cast and it added a fun sense of enjoyment like watching a table read. I look forward to listening to the following 5 books.

WARNING: this production NOT unabridged! I struggled to find a production that was, so if you want the full text you may have to get a copy and read! Please comment if you know otherwise.

Six out of five stars

There are many voices on this production, which makes the listening experience much richer than expected. If you liked the book, you will love this audio recording.

Epic story (horrible recording)

A great classic. Herbert is to be praised, and this is a must-read for anyone.

Recoding leaves much wanting as the actors for the Barron switch numerous times throughout the book. Otherwise, the readings are done well.

Masterpiece but poor audio

audio quality for this recording was very poor. for some reason had a very high dynamic range which would change suddenly when the voices performed dialogue. the narrator was too quiet when other voices were too loud. I was generally not a fan of the narration being a performance from many voice actors but the constant change from loud to quiet was what really made me not enjoy this

terriffic

The book is excellent. I couldn't put it down at all. I felt like I was there, and I felt for the characters. I wanted to reach into the book and rescue them from the danger that was approaching. A great read!

Masterpiece

Dune is a beautifully written novel with an epic scope and strong characters. I can't believe I've gone so long without having experienced it. Everyone should at some point in their life.

My only issue with the audio book is that the performances by the actors were used heavily in the beginning for specific characters, and then only sprinkled throughout the rest of the book. While I appreciated the presence of such professional performances, they left me wishing that every line of dialogue was delivered by the appropriate actor, rather than mostly by the narrator. I have no issue with the narrator, but it did cause some confusion as to who was who in the beginning.

All in all, I have to say this is a near perfect novel and I can't wait to experience the rest of the Dune series.
