Publisher's summary

The first book of best-selling sci-fi author Jack Campbell’s new series "Beyond the Frontier" returns to find Captain John “Black Jack" Geary, the hero of the "Lost Fleet" series, awoken from cryogenic sleep to take command of the fleet.

Geary’s legendary exploits have earned him the adoration of the people—and the enmity of politicians convinced that a living hero can be a very inconvenient thing. The century-long war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds may be over, but Geary and his newly christened First Fleet have been ordered back into action to investigate the aliens occupying the far side of Syndic space and to determine how much of a threat they represent to the Alliance. And while the Syndic Worlds are no longer united, individually they may be more dangerous than ever before. Geary knows that members of the military high command and the government question his loyalty to the Alliance and fear his staging a coup, so he can’t help but wonder if the newly christened First Fleet is being sent to the far side of space on a suicide mission.

William C. Dietz, the author of the "Legion of the Damned" series, calls Dreadnaught "a rousing adventure", and Elizabeth Moon, the Nebula Award-winning author of the "Vatta's War" series, says it’s “loaded with edge-of-your-seat combat". Read by Christian Rummel, who has narrated The Lost Fleet series to excellent reviews, Dreadnaught promises to be an out-of-this-world experience.

Great Start to a Great Series!

This is a great adventure and great first book in a new "Blackjack" series. Readers new to this author and character can start right here, you need not read the previous series. Some reviewers have criticized the first half of the book as being long on setup and low on action, I enjoyed it, the politics and personalities of the Alliance, Syndicate, and the Fleet only add interest and suspense to the story. The narration is great, my only criticism is to bring in some regional North American accents as well as British/Irish/Aussie ones.
The battles in the second half are great as is the puzzle of the aliens. There is also a good wry sense of humor throughout. The cliffhanger ending left me wanting more. Overall 4 out of 5 stars.

Pretty good for the series

I'd give it 3.5 stars. The story of the lost fleet continues as the fleet heads to investigate the aliens. Overall the story is pretty interesting, but it has a few flaws. The narrator seems a little whiny to me at times, especially with the female voices. Also some plot elements that come as a surprise to the main characters were obvious if you thought about them at all. It's almost like the author came up with ideas while writing the book that he didn't bother to weave into the story earlier.

***** spoiler *****

For example, anyone that read the lost fleet series knows that the aliens can blow up the hypergates, but the humans have a safe guard that will destroy them safely, avoiding the destruction of an entire star system. The main character doesn't even think about the aliens destroying the gates anyway to make travel more difficult until he is on the far side of human space and someone else points it out to him. As soon as they discovered that the aliens could do it in the previous books I was immediately wondering why the aliens didn't destroy them anyway, yet no one in the fleet had apparently even considered the possibility in the several months before this... There are two other examples I can think of where I was way ahead of the characters in comprehending what was going on, though there are many more of them and they have a lot more time on their hands.

Fantastic Series

One of my all time favorite Sci-fi series. If you're at all interested in military space tactics -- these are the most realistic combat scenarios, fast and fun books. Highly recommend.

Desperately wanted to like it...

Way too slow. The first half just dragged. I kept going because other reviews stated this was a good listen but I’m not convinced. Once the story got going it was better but you have to ask yourself if you’re willing to invest the time to get through the first half. I’m not sure I can move on to book two. Maybe I revisit at a later date. Really unfortunate.

Not on my top 10 list, not even close

the story has a few good hipoints, but too much if it is a bore. especially the first half. will still get the sequel though.

Continued Excellence

Captain John "Blackjack" Geary's adventure continues! The way an alien species is portrayed in this series is really creative. Also the underlying events that will unfold later are shown here. Good read and better listen.

The story deserved 3.5 stars

Another of the Black Jack Geary book. Another rollicking ride in space. The characters remain the same and now the enemy is a new one. It's a fun listen. Not great literature and it won't stretch the old grey matter too much but it is bloody good fun.

Black Jack continues....

This continues The Lost Fleet saga in new series. Since the fleet found home, I guess Campbell (Hemry) wanted to change he name of the saga in some way; but if you listened the first Lost Fleet, this picks up right where Victorious, the 6th book in Lost Fleet series, left off. I hope The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier becomes a very long saga for Black Jack!
