Publisher's summary

You may know me best as Meredith Nic Essus, princess of faerie. Or perhaps as Merry Gentry, Los Angeles private eye. In the fey and mortal realms alike, my life is the stuff of royal intrigue and celebrity drama. Among my own, I have confronted horrendous enemies, endured my noble kin's treachery and malevolence, and honored my duty to conceive a royal heir - all for the right to claim the throne. But I turned my back on court and crown, choosing exile in the human world - and in the arms of my beloved Frost and Darkness.

While I may have rejected the monarchy, I cannot abandon my people. Someone is killing the fey, which has left the LAPD baffled and my guardsmen and me deeply disturbed. My kind are not easily captured or killed. At least not by mortals. I must get to the bottom of these horrendous murders, even if that means going up against Gilda, the Fairy Godmother, my rival for fey loyalties in Los Angeles.

But even stranger things are happening. Mortals I once healed with magic are suddenly performing miracles, a shocking phenomenon wreaking havoc on human/faerie relations. Though I am innocent, dark suspicions of banned magical activities swirl around me.

I thought I'd left the blood and politics behind in my own turbulent realm. I had dreamed of an idyllic life in sunny L.A. with my beloved ones beside me. But it becomes time to wake up and realize that evil knows no borders, and that nobody lives forever - even if they're magical.

Great book, not great narrator

The book is great, but it sounds like it's being narrated by my grandmother...which is weird in the sex scenes. The entire series is excelent, but maybe better to read in print.

Laurell's stories

I love Laurell's stories, all of them, but I love Mary stories the most. This was a delightful listen.

whoa there merry

I love this voice actress, she's the perfect voice for merry and she does many specific voices for the different characters.

the one problem with this book is although I love how the series moved theres the MOST sex in this book when the mystery case is a lot more interesting!

Sex scenes in a book for adults? *clutch the pearls*

I read so many reviews here complaining that there was too much sex in this novel. I had to laugh. Who doesn’t expect there to be explicit sex in a Laurell K. Hamilton novel?! It actually made me wonder if a church group hadn’t decided to gang up against this book or author in some sort of moral outrage. Pretty silly considering that this series of books revolves around a (fictitious) culture which views sex as something normal and not shameful. Personally, I enjoy the positive representation of a world in which sexuality, most notably female sexuality, is expressed freely and without artificial boundaries. Also of note is the fact that the sexual scenes are an integral part of the plot, not simply gratuitous fun (which would be fine too). I enjoyed this book in the Meredith Gentry series and look forward to reading future installments.

There's no place like Faerie!

Merry may have left the Faerie mounds for good. But faerie hasn't left Merry. Yet the demifae are the biggest issue now; especially Bittersweet. Bittersweet is evil personified for the demifae. Well, Bittersweet and her boyfriend. True love has been about murder and deceit and trying to bribe Merry into making her "big". Things at Maeve's house are getting tighter and tighter. What will the exiled do once Maeve is back?
