Publisher's summary

Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world's most powerful elite organizations - the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is 23 and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige's wildest antics can't hold a candle to those of her new charge - an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil...and evil is all too willing to claim her.

For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder - and frame Paige for the crime. It's an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to survive.

Critic reviews

"As in Armstrong's debut novel Bitten, this story's special strength lies in its seamless incorporation of the supernatural into the real world." ( Publishers Weekly)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

Not the best

Love the Kelley Armstrong series, however this was a little lame. I am hoping that the rest of the series is not a dime store series.

Interesting Series

First read this book years ago thru my library & got interested enough in Armstrong's Otherworld that I read the others in the series. I've been more interested in Paige & Lucas than Elena & Clay, on the whole. But, in listening to this story today, there were several times "Harvard" Paige was just TSTL and her intelligence did not shine through. I like Merlington as a narrator on the whole, but this recording is not a standout.

This is an amazing series!!!!

I’m not sure what’s turning people off from this book but I read this book. Probably about 13 years ago. I read it the old school way book in hand. And absolutely love the whole series of books. I bought every single one I can’t remember but I believe there are 18 in total. With the other series that are added in. And even 13 years later, it’s still my absolute favorite series I’ve ever read in my life. So take a chance read it if you want but as any other book that you read it’ll be your choice whether you like it or not. My only wishes they would turn into a movie, because the graphics would be amazing. It definitely wouldn’t be another. Goddamn Spider-Man or superhero movie.🤣🤣🤣

Better than I thought

After reading 2 books about Elaina and her pack I wondered if I wanted to switch gears and hear about another part of this story. But, surprisingly I liked it very much. I especially like the strength of Paige's character in this book. I would recommend it.

Brilliant as always

Kelley Armstrong’s books are always a delight. I love the different characteristics her various protagonists bring to the table. Paige and Lucas are VERY different from Elena and Clay, but they are realistic and competent, with a quieter strength than the werewolves’ brute force. Savannah, while frustrating, is a pretty accurate depiction of a thirteen-year-old girl. Anyone who doesn’t like these characters is, I think, failing to recognize how REALISTIC they are in a world that still offers plenty of fantasy elements.

Anything but Dime Store Magic

This is one of my absolute favorite stories! I love Paige and Cortez so much. I love Savannah’s wild willfulness. It’s one of the best reads and I’d recommend it any day. 10/10
