Publisher's summary

Evan and Caris St. John own a beach house on isolated Daufuskie Island off the South Carolina coast. After a hurricane strikes the island, Caris and their three children discover a mysterious treasure chest in its wake. Unbeknownst to them, the chest has been sealed for nearly a century and a half. A mysterious Gullah woman rumored to be a witch predicted decades earlier that the family would break the seal and awaken the magic inside. The unbelievable begins to happen.

Through a sudden turn of events, the St. Johns find themselves whisked away on a desperate quest through time and space to reunite their family. Along the way, they must survive a brutal plantation overseer, the Confederate Army fleeing Sherman's March to the Sea, and one man lost in time who seeks to change his future and the course of history as we know it....

Everything now hinges on the actions they take in the present, as well as the actions they have already taken in the past, on Daufuskie Island.

Daufuskie resident

I love this book. I didn’t read the description so I thought it would be more of a historical novel; however, I was pleasantly surprised with the story itself. It kept you wanting to know what happens next.
Being a full time resident of Daufuskie I was able to enjoy the descriptive parts of the island more than the people who think this world was made up. You’ll never know what you’ll see on Daufuskie Island!

GREAT Story that will Keep All Ages Hooked

Well-written family fiction with unexpected turns and accurate historical settings. John Lueder’s writing is clever and unexpected. This book is in a genre of its own and would be great for a class to read. It’s about the magic of family, the beauty of our Nation’s history, and a love of this place, Daufuskie Island, and the people who live there. Thoroughly enjoyed the story, the writing, and the narration. Highly recommend.

TWO THUMBS UP

Intriguing. Captivating. Entertaining.
I find this to be well-written...narrator was perfect. This 'take-me-away' exciting story depicts life's events that catapults you into destiny. Daufuskie Island illuminates historic events and magical moments all at once. It shows the power of hope and love that holds a family together.
I am looking forward to the movie!!

Author needs to keep his day job

The author had a great idea for a plot in a story.

Unfortunately he had neither of the talent nor the editing in place to truly bring it to life. Flat. Facts inserted at odd points in almost a lecture style. After reading about the author’s day job that had some logic. What did not make logical sense was reading something written at a middle school level.

The assumption of an adult audience intelligence level is laughable. For example, in one scene two characters are worried about being overheard talking about time travel. Yet at the same time they are openly discussing strategic events of history that - if overheard - could have changed history dramatically. Or a reference to the military code of conduct that came well after WWII being referred to by a revolutionary war soldier.

I was very frustrated with the book because I recognized that the story could have been developed into a truly great book with the right author and editor.

I love Daufuskie island and had been looking forward to a great story set there.

I’ve debated between one and two stars. Went with two due to the plot concept and narrator only. Not the reality or realization of a story.

Author needs to keep his day job.
