Publisher's summary

Shapeshifting skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is the best in the business when it comes to slaying vampires. But her latest fanged foe may be above her pay grade.

For centuries, the extremely powerful and ruthless vampire witches of the European Council have wandered the Earth, controlling governments, fostering war, creating political conflict, and often leaving absolute destruction in their wake. One of the strongest of them is set to create some havoc in the city of New Orleans, and it's definitely personal.

Jane is tasked with tracking him down. With the help of a tech wiz and an ex-Army ranger, her partners in Yellowrock Securities, she'll have to put everything on the line, and hope it's enough. Things are about to get real hard in the Big Easy.

Pleasantly surprised

What did you love best about Dark Heir?

That it brought pieces of previous books into play and let characters from those books come out to play

What did you like best about this story?

That Bruiser and Jane became a couple and that you can see his unconditional love for her

Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the only place I've heard Ms. Hvam but she's amazing

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Where Jane is badly burned and both Ely and Bruiser try to come up with ideas on how to help her

Any additional comments?

I love this series. Just when you think you can't be surprised, you are. I especially like how she visited other books from the series and some of the characters. I like how her characters good or bad have personality.

The ever changing Jane

For fans of the series, it's not hard to say that this could possibly be the best yet. Jane's life is coming together finally with finding the much needed family she missed out on, and getting the kind of boyfriend she deserves. Along with that she and Beast have bonded as one, working and feeling in harmony. All this is a good thing, because she's battling the Son of Darkness, the most powerful of vampires that goes on a killing spree across the city. It's non stop action and exhaustion for the security crew, as Jane is ordered to take his heart, but leave him alive to return to Leo. That's a tall order that requires the assistance from the witches, and Molly still can't be trusted with her dark side. Brute the werewolf has an intriguing role in this book, sure to develop in future books. As always, Jane goes through more personal growth with her quest, where she decides exactly what she is, as a metamorphosis takes place. Love the narrator, she's Jane.

Hvam keeps bring me back to Jane and Beast

Dark Heir is the 9th book in the Jane Yellowrock series and I still hate Leo! Why Jane doesn’t just stake him is the most infuriating part of the series. Leo is one of those “gray” characters, he’s not 100% good and not 100% evil. In fact all the vampires are pretty much in the same area as Leo. Oh sure some are more evil than others but Faith Hunter’s vampires are not the cuddly kind, not even the “nice” ones.

Like many of the vampire troubles Jane finds herself in is due in big part to the Master of New Orleans, Leo. Jane and her partners, the Younger brothers are trying to stop a crazy old suck head that Leo had chained up in his basement. There’s a lot of vampire politics involved keeping Jane from just staking the dangerous vampire.

As Jane and the gang work to bring down the vampire there’s a lot of emotional and relationship stuff going on for Jane. She and the Younger brothers are becoming more of a family than just partners. Molly, Jane’s BFF and witch is walking the line between being a good witch and a bad witch and their friendship is still not back on solid ground. Then there’s George aka Bruiser. He and Jane seems to be heading in the right direction for their relationship when I really enjoy seeing now that I’m back on Team George.

One thing I could have done without was a phone call with Ricky. But at least it was short and Jane had the right reaction to it.

Dark Heir is not to be missed by Jane Yellowrock fans. While it was not my favorite book in the series it was still an enjoyable listen and I can’t wait to see where Faith Hunter task Jane and Beast.

The best Jane Yellowrock book in a while

The Jane Yellowrock books are fun, and this novel continues that tradition. It avoids some of the pitfalls that decreased my enjoyment of the previous couple of books, especially in regards to a clearly defined story ark and compelling characters. Worth your time and money.

Jane is in fine form

Where does Dark Heir rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

All of Faith Hunter's books are among my favorites. The characters stay in my mind and I always want to know what happens next. This book is no different and I will listen to it more than once or twice.

What did you like best about this story?

Oh so many things to choose from. I love that she has a relationship with someone who is all in. I liked the MOC holding back from touching her. The Younger Bros interplay is fantastic. If I keep going it will seem like gushing.

Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Ms. Hvam is Jane/Beast. I cannot imagine any other reader. From the first book to now she has settled into the character's skin. The Cherokee words flow more smoothly. I have actually tried other authors because Ms. Hvam was the reader.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I like the waking up with Bruiser. It is clear Jane can handle herself but being able to settle into an embrace has its own magic. She can gain strength from her romantic relationship and the one with the Younger Bros. Molly????

Always entertaining

Enjoyed this installment. Janie finally has the right men in her life! Bruiser is perfect! The evil she fights this time is less terrifying but the hunt had suspense and thrills.
