Publisher's summary

Cthulhu Armageddon is the story of a world 100 years past the rise of the Old Ones which has been reduced to a giant monster-filled desert and pockets of human survivors (along with Deep Ones, ghouls, and other "talking" monsters).

John Henry Booth is a ranger of one of the largest remaining city-states when he's exiled for his group's massacre and the suspicion that he's "tainted". Escaping with a doctor who killed her husband, John travels across the Earth's blasted alien ruins to seek the life of the man who killed his friends.

It's the one thing he has left.

Good but characters mimic other books

I really like this author and this book was good. The only problem is that after reading his other novels I felt that the main character in this book is the same character as in the others with a different name.

A fun adaptation of the Cthulhu mythos

If you're looking for something that captures the deep existential horror of H.P. Lovecraft's sories and poems you won't find it here. The author has however honored old H.P. in a different way. The terrors that lurk in the shadows of dreams have been yanked out into the light and instead of hiding behind the scenes and preying on the few they now prey upon humanity as a whole.

The book is one part adventure, one part military sci-fi but really succeeds where it very artfully and respectfully injects Lovecraftian lore into he world giving it a thrilling and ominous feel.

It is a slightly campy revenge romp chalk with combat, gunplay and adventure. I enjoyed it through and through.

as an aside: If this concept wasn't spawned from the campaign setting of the author's tabletop sessions then I think we would all be remis if we didn't use it in our own. It would make a wonderful campaign world.

Brilliant

This book was quite a surprise. It blended genres and told an amazing story. It was weird and offbeat. And downright hilarious at times. Loved it. Great story, great characters. Brilliant post apocalyptic for anyone who enjoys the genre.

The narrator is really good. I really enjoyed his performance.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

A Post Apocalyptic Cowboy series with Magic

Whats not to like about this book, well that is unless you are John Henry Booth. Great performance by the Narrator (Kafer), and great unique story written by Phipps. Can't wait to see where Booth will end up next.

Rangers are out for blood...ok, any bio-mass!

The post-apocalyptic western “Cthulhu Armageddon” is a wild ride of epic proportions. First off, let me say that I haven’t read any of H.P. Lovecraft’s writings, so I’m not sure if the creatures beyond Cthulhu itself are part of that pantheon or if they’re made up entirely from Charles Phipps’ mind. The sheer number and variety of the beasts in this book is overwhelming.

Set hundreds of years after the rising of the Great Old Ones, the remnants of humanity cling to life across a vast desert that used to be Middle America. The story begins by following a squad of R&E Rangers, led by our intrepid hero John Booth, investigating a series of mass kidnappings across the Wasteland. The case leads them to a black cathedral where they face the greatest threat to the last of humanity – outside of the mythical creatures.

What follows is a wild ride of betrayal, deceit and backstabbing as Booth struggles to find meaning and determine why he, of all people, was marked by the Hand of Nyarlathotep, which gives him limited immortality…at a price.

A love letter to post-apocalyptic tropes.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Time spent reading is always well-spent. This was a decent read, and did a nice job of giving all the good parts of the genre plenty of time to play.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Integrating Lovecraftian elements into a fairly-rote post-apocalyptic fantasy was a nice touch.

Any additional comments?

This was obviously a labor of love for a dedicated fan of video games and classic sci-fi. It is well-enough written, with echoes of Gaiman and King. It just never really achieves the level of technical literary proficiency that Neil and Stephen manage to hit.

I enjoyed the brutally quick pacing, the fantastic creatures, starkly bleak characters, and creative blending of genres. This was a fun romp, if not an instant classic. I will watch the author, though, because there are moments of real brilliance in this book. Just needs some prosaic polish.

Wow

I got this book via audiobook boom. This story was an old west apocalypse story. I am not sure how to review the book. The narrator did a good job with the entire story. Not sure if I enjoyed it or not. It was well written and there were many scenes that were interesting.

Fun action romp through dystopian Earth.

Plenty of action and monsters and a real dystopian feel. Alas, I struggled with the narration and the 'protag' throughout, although that may just be me. Mad Max vs Predator is the best way I can describe this, so if that's your bag then give it a shot and hold on tight for gargantuan beings and vistas alike.

A very orderly chaos

A passable but ultimately forgettable story. The protagonist wandered through the plot points with the control and confidence of a Lone Ranger in a western or a navy seal from military fictions. Though the setting is an eldritch god apocalypse, I felt that the horrors and madness of this setting weren’t properly utilized. Lovecraftian names and locations were treated as little more than set dressing with little regard or understanding of their scale and scope.
