Publisher's Summary

After nearly a decade away, Nebula Award-winning author Elizabeth Moon makes a triumphant return to science fiction with this installment in a thrilling new series featuring the daring hero of her acclaimed Vatta's War sequence.

Summoned to the home planet of her family's business empire, space-fleet commander Kylara Vatta is told to expect a hero's welcome. But instead she is thrown into danger unlike any other she has faced and finds herself isolated, unable to communicate with the outside world, commanding a motley group of unfamiliar troops, and struggling day by day to survive in a deadly environment with sabotaged gear. Only her undeniable talent for command can give her ragtag band a fighting chance.

Yet even as Ky leads her team from one crisis to another, her family and friends refuse to give up hope, endeavoring to mount a rescue from halfway around the planet - a task that is complicated as Ky and her supporters find secrets others will kill to protect: a conspiracy infecting both government and military that threatens not only her own group's survival but her entire home planet.

    "Pathetic narration"
What did you like best about Cold Welcome? What did you like least?

Typical Elizabeth Moon quality, poor choice of narrator.

What didn’t you like about Brittany Pressley’s performance?

Mispronunciation of a significant number of words. Command-dent for Commandant, saying that the Command-dent was an alley, etc, etc.

"Mispronounced words are driving me batty!!!"
Would you listen to Cold Welcome again? Why?

Probably will -- love the author and series.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

If the narrator can't be bothered to get common pronunciations of words as COMMON as "potable" and "commandant" they need a better narrator.

"Great Story and the narrator is good"

make sure that you read the Vatta Wars before you read this book it also a very good series and this is it sequel. this book has a great storyline but you will miss a lot of information if you do not go back and read the previous books written. the only reason why I gave a four star 4 performance is because the narrator does pronounce things a little bit differently however with that being said she was a very good narrator... okay it really wasn't pronouncing she just got the word flat wrong. but overall she still did a very good performance and this was a great book would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Star Travel.

"Great book, well performed but with some issues."
If you could sum up Cold Welcome in three words, what would they be?

    Robinson Vatta Triumphs

What did you like best about this story?

It's sort of Robinson Crusoe/survival at sea/with origin stories, mysteries, and intrigue. Action and non action both are driving forces.

What about Brittany Pressley’s performance did you like?

She does well making you feel the characters and holding your attention HOWEVER she needs to learn to pronounce some words. "Commandant" is not pronounced the same as "Commandment", the accent is on the last syllable and much harder. It was VERY irritating, there were other words like that, but that one in particular was repeated easily a hundred times, and sorely mispronounced each time.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, definitely... it starts slow, but around the middle you can't put it down.

    Any additional comments?

I can't stress enough the irritation on the mispronunciations. Incredibly annoying. That said, still a good performance, and a very fun book.

    "Kylara's back"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Excellent listen. It has a no space battles like the earlier series but the action is mostly ground based - a story spiced with a bit of detective story, Tomb Raider, James Bond(ish) action, Indiana Jones(ish) stuff .. and of course Kyara Vatta who proves herself as good on the ground as in a ship.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cold Welcome?

    The crash of the shuttle
Stella in the bath when killers break in ..

What about Brittany Pressley’s performance did you like?

other than a few mispronouncing .. the story flowed nicely

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

I am glad I refused to listen to some of the other reviews .. I suspect these are the same type of people that troll the internet hating on anything they find. I thought this was a better book than the ones in the first series ..and that's no small thing

"Moon great as usual, add Pressley and WOW !"

Fantastic to see The Vatta series continuing with Vatta's Peace. Character development through the series continues with this work and the Admiral's years of experience is portrayed in the story very well. The addition of Brittany Pressley as narrator was a masterful stroke. After this book, in my mind, she has become the voice of Kylara Vatta.

    "Weak revival"

I loved the original Vatta's War series, though there were a few discrepancies throughout the books and Ms. Moon went a little overboard with people's issues with Kylara's love life and it's impact on politics and her ability to perform her job. The new Vatta's Peace seems to be taking this ridiculousness to a whole new level. As a former member of the military I found the way the people who were stranded with her, especially a member of her own staff, behaved in their situation to be completely ludicrous. I know Ms. Moon is an outstanding author after having also read her Paksenarrion series so I am really hoping she will reign in some of the more silly plot devices as she continues the series.

"Great story in spite of performance"

This story was as great as it was unexpected. That being said. Brittany Pressley's performance was unemotional and flat, nearly qualifying as monotone. I miss Cynthia Holloway's infectious voice and the myriad voices accents and inflections she employed to make sure you knew who was talking even without being told.

    "God, I've missed these books!"

Elizabeth Moon is one of my favourite authors and I was most definitely not disappointed with this one. The story was very good and I badly want to see that under ground base and work out what or who built it! Just like the rest of the series there was plenty of action without overdoing the techno talk, good characters and more then enough left unexplained for another couple of books. Hope we don't have to wait to long for the next one. 😁
