Publisher's Summary

This box set contains the first three novels from New York Times best-selling author, J.A. Cipriano and J.B Garner's Clans of Shadow Series: Heart of Gold, Feet of Clay, Fists of Iron.

Audiobook 1: Heart of Gold.

My name is Frank Butcher, and when I got out of my truck to deliver the last package of the day, I never expected to get blown up by anti-magic zealots.

Yeah, you heard me right. I said magic. I didn't know it was a thing either.

Now, an ancient artifact is the only thing keeping me alive, and to make matters worse, that artifact is what those cultists wanted.

Still, I could have made a run for it, disappeared down into South America and spent the rest of my life on a beach. I nearly did it, but I didn't.

Why? Because the cultists have offered me a trade. Come to them, or they start killing kids.

Audioook 2: Feet of Clay.

My name is Frank Butcher, and evidently when you save the world, it comes back for seconds.

After I stopped a world ending apocalypse, my allies tried to cut open my chest with an axe. Kind of messed up if you ask me.

Thankfully, I've got a chance to return the favor. And I'm going to take it. Not because they're trying to magically reshape the natural laws that govern our planet. No, I'm doing this because trying to cut out my heart is not okay.

Audiobook 3: Fists of Iron.

Remember what I said about saving the world? Yeah, apparently the third time is the charm.

Turns out our little plan to stop the apocalypse, left the gate open for some bastards straight out of HP Lovecraft. Now they've come on through to try to turn the planet into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

That's not exactly my jam, so if I want to go on living here, I'll need to find a way to stop them.

My name is Frank Butcher, and one way or another, I'm putting an end to this once and for all.

"Oh, Frank, Frank, Frank... a heart of gold"

I loved Frank. He was not only funny, Smart, a good man, but also loved his mom. What can I say, he won his way into my heart. He's not only a witty man, but he has some AMAZING one liners, that cracked me up though most of the book.
This series is action packed. and you start to go from chapter one, till the end.

I would recommend this series to anyone who loves magic, and a great story line.
The narrator, did a Amazon job! I can't see frank being done by anyone else.

    "Fun take on Urban Fantasy"

This book was a pretty good romp in an action packed world with a reluctant hero who has a decent core. All of the characters were well-developed and just felt familiar, like a family or rig circle of friends. The damsel in distress is a little boy, which was a fun take on the trope of kidnapped princesses. And Frank just plain has grit, rolling with every new setback and still coming out swinging. Lots of fun to listen to, I'd recommend it whole-heartedly.

    "Not bad"

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This series wasn't bad. I liked the idea of an anti magic hero instead of the run of the mill most powerful magician/wizard/sorcerer etc but they just don't know it yet type. The protagonist swears a lot and refers to his "rugged handsomeness" a little too much for me and it takes away from the story in some parts.

The whole series revolves around the kidnapping and search for the same person over and over. Some parts are very predictable. I never really felt much of a connection to the characters. It's good that all 3 books are offered together as, to me, it could have been just one longer story.

The narration was well done. I didn't have any trouble telling characters apart.

Overall it was different but also more of the same. Because all 3 books are together I think it is worth the credit but definitely not on their own.

    "Easy listen"

First you get 3 books for 1 credit. If you like the author or series that's a good deal. Narration is really good, felt as if he nailed the main character. Now as far as the story goes.... well in book 1 they need to rescue the golden child... in book 2, rescue the golden child..... and in book 3, well of course the golden child needs to be rescued. That's an over simplification, but more or less the character(s) goal in each book. The main character is a macho tough guy, who's really a big ol' softy. He's a loose cannon, but lives by a code (taught to him by his mama). He inadvertently becomes wrapped up in the supernatural world and gets a stone heart which nullifies magic, making him hard to kill as everyone tries to use him in their nefarious plots. The story does offer plenty of humor and the pace is good. This was an easy listen and overall not bad.

    "Thrilling, humorous series"

This is an excellent series of audiobooks and a great value for just one credit. All three stories are action packed, full of humour, espionage, magic, battles, betrayals and have splashes of romance scattered throughout. The characters feel authentic: from, Frank the reluctant hero, to the stoic Abner and Molly, the crazy Irish warrior, you cannot help but become attached to them all, as they try at save Max (Gabriella’s son) and the world along with it. The narration for the whole series was extremely well done.  Joe Hempel was consistent with all the voices, gave the characters individual personalities, was brilliant at bringing out the sarcastic humour and brought energy to the story. I liked how this story progressed from Frank being trust unexpectedly into a supernatural world he did not know, or want to know, existed, to him finding the courage to be brave and selfless and working to save those he cared about as well as the world as a whole. This is a great collection, well written and narrated and definitely worth listening to.

    "Hard Hitting adventure and fun"

This was a fun and humorous listen. The story is creative and entertaining. The narrator does a very good job of presenting the story and portraying the characters.

This is not for young listeners. The story often uses adult language.

    "Wizards, GODS, kidnapping and sarcasm"

There is a little bit of everything in this book so there's a lot to like. I am generally a fan of Cipriano and his work. This omnibus is no exception. There are some characters that show inspiration from other series such as Dresden or Jeremiah hunt. Good amount of humor that Bruce Campbell would be perfect for the movie role if one comes. Each book leads into the next flawlessly and really makes for one great continual listen. This is the first book ive listened to Joe Hempel and I did enjoy his work. The voice he did for Molly did take me out of the experience from time to time but other than that it was a enjoyable listen and I will check out some more of his work as well.
Overall, it's worth a credit to get all three books in one and is an interesting story with lots of fun references and good amount of humor.

    Story
"From parcel delivery to saving the world"

This set of books takes some fairly familiar premises such as a likable 'nobody' being thrown into events way beyond their comfort zone and discovering a new world in the process, but uses these ideas in an interesting and compelling manner to produce a series of books that are highly enjoyable, even when some of the 'twists' such as those in the second book were fairly obvious ones.

When we are first introduced to Frank Butcher, he is a former soldier working as a parcel delivery guy, mainly to support his movie collection, an interest that is presumably shared with one or both of the writers since the amount of references to Star Wars and to a lesser extent other movies is a little excessive at first and thankfully gets toned down a fair bit in the second two books. Shortly after we meet him, he finds himself introduced to a world of magic, including some warring factions that are equally flawed in many ways.

I am glad that these three books have been collected into a single edition as after the first one, they are very much part of a series more than they are books in their own right, however since the series itself is a strong one, you do not mind this at all and are glad to continue onto the next one each time.

Something that definitely helped to make this series an enjoyable one was the great performance by the narrator who helped to establish distinct voices and characters for all the recurring roles, from the stars down to the more minor supporting cast who might have only cropped up a few times. I hadn't heard anything he had read before, but would be happy to see his name on audiobooks I might choose in the future.

Overall, this is a well written and performed audiobook that I would readily recommend to anyone else who is a fan of the genre.

"Action packed books with a great sense of humour"
Would you consider the audio edition of Clans of Shadow Omnibus to be better than the print version?

The narrator is brilliant. We get some great one-liners as the main character meets the stories head-on and the narration really brings them and the characters to life. Really good!! In fact I'd say the perfect narrator for this type of book and certainly for Frank.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the normal guy turns into the hero/main character. I also like the blend of normal world with other things going on that this character is thrust into.

What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?

We get a brilliant sense of the main characters through the narration also a level of pace that makes you want to listen to the entire book in one go, and then jump into the next. The story is great and the narration had me hooked from the start.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did in fact listen to the first book in one sitting, and got into the next one. Unfortunately I had to go to work or I'd have sat at home and listened to them all. I was hooked. Great books!

    Any additional comments?
