Publisher's Summary

Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He's the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him - or let someone else do the job.

Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise's next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who's sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for supernatural power, he must find - and destroy - the source of that inhuman magic.

    "Urban fantasy with an anti-hero"

Child of Fire is a great way to start an urban fantasy series. The magic system seems nicely developed, the characters are interesting, and it manages to avoid the tropes that make me roll my eyes at many offerings from the genre (love triangles, plots that pivot of over reactions, over the top villains and heroes, etc).

I think its safe to call Ray an anti-hero. He definitely has a checkered past and while he is trying to move forward, he struggles in his motivations. It is easy to root for him to do the "right" thing, although that is not often a path that is clear cut.

I like the moral ambiguity that Connelly incorporates into the story. Evil deeds under the guise of good intentions, when to kill and when to stay one's hand, the opportunity for redemption. The result is a nice level of depth to the plot.

The weakest part of the book is pacing. It takes Connelly some time to lay enough foundation around the action scenes to for the story to click. However, I'd much rather see some pacing issues than another supposedly smart UF heroine who runs head first into danger because she angry at her maybe boyfriend for some stupid reason.

Well done, Mr. Connelly. I look forward to more good work.

Fascinating description of a frequently dismissed area, namely magic. The lack of white vs. black is a refreshing change from the norm. I am looking forward to more reading pleasure.

"Want to get the other books in the series."
Would you listen to Child of Fire again? Why?

Eventually. I read a series if the other books become available I would likely read them every couple of years or so.

What other book might you compare Child of Fire to and why?

Dresden files or Nine Princes in Amber. It is a fast paced first person narrative. Somewhat reminds me of the Parker Novels by Donald E. Westlake Although they are a different genre.

Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?

    The main character. Lily

    "Urban Fantasy done well"

Enjoyed listening to this book. It has been on my to be read list for a while and came highly recommended (with very good reason). I like that the story is from Ray's point of view and that the reader is figuring things out at the same time that he is. Was left with lots of questions at the end of the book and wanting to read more (not a bad thing).

Christian Rummel is the perfect narrator for this novel. He nails the character voices and his performance is well paced.

Reading Twenty Palaces: A Prequel first certainly isn't mandatory, but it does fill in some blanks and the back story referenced in this book.

Audible, oh great & all powerful, please consider arranging for Book 2: Game of Cages and Book 3: Circle of Enemies to be conjured into audio.

    "alright"
Would you try another book written by Harry Connolly or narrated by Christian Rummel?

if in dire need of a new book

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

An alright story, with a very original interpretation of magic

What three words best describe Christian Rummel’s voice?

pleasant Works well with the story

Do you think Child of Fire needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

the story line leaves much to be explained. The protagonist keeps hinting at something that happened before the book takes place.
