It just gets better

Have any of you read a series of books in which the first book is good and then with each additional book it loses itself? This is not the case when CJ Cherryh writes a series. They just get better and better. She writes with a delicious complexity of cultures, politics and action while constructing characters that are real, including their flaws. Yet, they are characters that one can root for and identify with. The narrator did a really extraordinary job. The bottom line is download this book and enjoy it. Enjoy them all.

A whirl of worlds.

This series is in many ways Cherryh's most accessible one. She takes on one species after another and makes them real as a dime. And comprehensible by their own lights. Without ever making them into humans with fur or feathers. It's a wonderful space opera, which I normally hate. But here, when the alliens are so alien and yet, somehow people you know, how can you resist?
Some whiny bits in the dialog. Listen to it and see what you think. It didn't ruin my enjoyment of the books.But you might feel differently.

Well the first book more or less consumable, but this sequel.....
I just finished book 6 of Foreigner Sequence, and it does not compare to this :-<, I just can't believe it was written by the same author.
If not for the narration , i would've dropped it somewhere during the first hour or so.

As in my last review, great books great story. ,

As I said in my last review, these books are keeping it new and interesting, the plot line is still keeping me reading, and the narrator has a good grasp on how it should be played. I am lining up the fourth book as I type, I am just sorry that the series has only five books(so far). I hope there will be more soon. So if you want a really good read, try these ones, I don't think anyone will be disappointed.

Stuff Happens But No Real Plot

What did you like best about Chanur's Venture? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one seemed like fluff--not necessarily bad, just unfocused. It has many of the interesting elements of the first such as inter-clan rivalry and an array of unique alien races. It also has a intriguing exploration of how Pyanfar's mate copes with being overthrown and largely emasculated.

The publisher's summary implies the human plays some major role concerning trade, but that really gets lost in what largely seems to be the space equivalent of an extending Hollywood chase scene.

Would you recommend Chanur's Venture to your friends? Why or why not?

To me it largely depends on whether the 3rd book in the series is good. The book is tolerable as a bridge to the 3rd book, if it delivers.

This story seemed incomplete, just stops in the middle of the excitement. Thought I erred in the download and searched for the second part. dissappointing!

Gripping

Darn good thing this is an old series! The book stopped before I was ready! I’m off to get the next one and stay up late to find out what is going to happen next!

What's with the com?

I love the Chanur Saga and except for the change made in this one where you hear people over com differently than in person I loves the voice actor too. the "static" where the translator doesn't work right is jarring. otherwise great.

Terrible Story, Confusing Writing....Just Gah!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Alright, so this is most probably the worst book I have ever downloaded. The names were overly complicated and I quite frankly got lost and confused a lot. I mean really does one need a character called Stelea Steles Stelem? Every time I heard that name I was wondering what the heck was going on

What could C. J. Cherryh have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Made it more like the first book, pithy dialog ect...Instead of the their shooting at us, we should shoot at them. Oh no we're in trouble again, but we can always buy ourselves out with the credit paper.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Ryming the names for one. I mean really she made it sound like she was almost singing them, which lead me to wonder what the heck was going on and why in the name of black holes I had spent money on this book

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was very disappointed in this book, as is obvious by my other comments. It seemed very formulaic to me.

Terrible story, well-performed

The entire novel is just a series of unrealistically and pointlessly hostile bureaucrats arguing with the captain. There is no climax, no payoff to the plot, and no interesting sci-fi ideas beyond what was already described in the first book.

Charitably one might describe this as the unfortunately dragging middle chapters of a story that had an interesting start (previous book) and could theoretically have an interesting end (subsequent book, perhaps), but somebody choose to make this a complete novel, and that was a baaaad decision. Such a bad decision that this series won't be getting any more of my money.
