Critic reviews

“Sharp tactical plotting, hazardous cross-country travel and a dash of sardonic humor mark Butcher's fourth Codex Alera novel...Butcher deftly deploys intrigue, conflicted loyalties and hairbreadth action to excellent effect. Few writers balance military realism and cinematic swashbuckling with so much skill or wit.” (Publishers Weekly)

"The fourth Codex Alera novel further develops the world and characters of its predecessors and confirms Butcher's mastery of action-filled fiction.” (Booklist)

“I couldn't put this one down...Great work.” (SF Revu)

I had to STOP everything!

I have listened to the books in this series and (yikes!) I got so involved I stopped everything I was doing and enjoyed the action! Kate Reading is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. She really brings the characters to life throughout the whole series thus far and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of emotion in her voice! I found myself "feeling" the emotions of characters and situations and I loved the descriptions of places and people, the writer really drew me into the story. I would have to say that this series should be on the credit-worthy list. As a side note, I feel the need to add that I love "Epics" but I am terribly picky about what series I keep listening / reading. This is a great one and I will be sad when it's over.

The mind of Jim Butcher is a wonderful place.

I'm so hooked on this series, I've listened to book after book without stopping, sometimes ending one book late at night, only to crouch on the floor in the dark with my laptop anxiously downloading the next one, while trying not to wake my partner. My mind is filled with Vord and Carnum and High Lords and Ladies. FANTASTIC!

Simply Amazing.

This series has kept me hooked for months, not only through a flowing story of strong characters but also with Kate Reading. She captures every aspect of the characters without the slightest hesitation, through her the emotion that black type couldn't fully throw out was felt through tone and depth. The Romanic spin about the stories were also clever, Jim didn't over exert his skill by placing unmemorable places and objects within his world. Not to say other Fantasy writers have this as a fault, but this material is laid out for anyone to pick up and immerse themselves without little effort. From beginning to end, you grow up with Tavi, you begin to understand the Highlord's decisions, and you just can't help but to wish harm onto the enemies of the Realm.

This is Fantasy Writing at it's grandest.

Amazing

Jim Butcher has done this again, trapped everything into a book, magic, Romans, love, prison brake and more. his writing is as good as ever. Tavi has work to do, he is now captain of a army. still without any furries of his own he needs to use ingenuity to defend from a attack, but with a spy in the camp is he safe. especially a spy who knows who he really is.

There is one thing I don't like, and its my personal opinion, but Butcher is starting to put more and more sex into his novels. to many authors I find start off with no sex, or very little and are discrete, then after a few books there is lots of detailed sex. I personally find it ruins the magic of a book, and I am finding Jim Butcher is doing that here too.

i still really love the reversal of magic you find in this world, its fantastic and amazing, everything else is great. of course he still needs to work on foreshadow but maybe i just read to much that i can make the connection quickly.

Wonderful series

I just love this series, I love all of the characters and care what is happening to each and every one, good and bad! I will be sad if it ends. Soon as I am done, I get the next book.

SO MUCH ACTION!!!! SO GOOD!!!

What a fantastic addition to the series.. The story was full with secrets coming out and new secrets hidden away.. New allies and new enemies. It was just too many things too many emotions packed in one book, and it was amazing.

As usual action sense were well written and twists and turns were everywhere. Tavi is so grown, he is not that little kid anymore, and unexpected characters become his supporters and trustees.

Can't stop on talking about how good Kate Reading is in narrating, and she does a great job with book, specially with the number of years between each book, people grow and voices change, and she did a great job in accommodating that.

Will start reading the next book soon... Can't wait.

those crows begotten horns!

Kate Reading is amazing as always, but the plague of the horns continues. i cannot fathom why any professional producer would include such a corney and annoying sound, seemingly at random.

Generally good

Would you listen to Captain's Fury again? Why?

Yes, I enjoy Butcher's story-telling.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Captain's Fury?

The confrontation between Tavi and Senatro Arnos' singulares.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

She does well enough. I find the horns in the narration to be random and annoying.

Any additional comments?

Drop the horns.

Oh please please someone get Butcher an editor!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

It's a fun story and the characters really grow on you, but they all:1) arch an eyebrow (a pale eyebrow, a heavy eyebrow, a disdainful eyebrow ...2) lift their chin in defiance/resolution/determination3) ball their fists and grind their teeth in fury4) notice or keep people from noticing their hands trembling.

Kate Reading is an inspired reader. One of the absolute top out there.
