Publisher's summary

A demon king. An infernal city. The whole world hangs in the balance.

Yancy Lazarus - mage, bluesman, and demon-souled - is having the worst hangover of his life.

He just woke up in a dingy hotel in literal Hell with one eye missing, an arm covered in swirling golden tattoos, and no recollection of the past six months.

All he wants is to figure out how he ended up in the Great Below and whether there’s a way home. But getting out of Hell is no easy feat. Yancy is the most wanted man in the infernal city of Pandæmonium, and he’s being hunted by demonic cutthroats for a series of high-profile murders he can’t remember committing.

Now, Lazarus will have to rely on the help of a shape-shifting stranger with a dark past to battle his way past a legion of freakish Hellions and the murderous Derby-Girl Nation to reclaim a weapon capable of killing even immortals. And to escape Hell? Well, he’ll need to pull off the greatest coup the Abyss has seen since the Morning Star took on Heaven. If he fails, not only will the King of Pandæmonium roast his soul for eternity, but his friends will be left to the mercies of the Savage Prophet and the Morrigan, goddess of death.

No actual demons were harmed in this book!

Actually, lot of demons get their arses kicked, but that is niether here nor there.

I had not heard of this Yancy fellow before this book. Whoops! My mistake!!! How had I not heard of Mr. Lazarus before this? Well, now I am not only intrigued, but I am also hooked!

This book starts off with a major shock for Lazarus, as he wakes up in literal Hell, and from there his day goes to crap. This character has lot in common with some of th Urban Fantasy characters I do know, like Harry Dresden, Sandman Slim, Montague and Strong, and Nate Temple. My sad face comes from the fact that this is Book 5. FIVE. I've missed out on some great reading, brilliant writing, and stellar narration. I do not exaggerate. This book took me to all kinds of places, and nevr once did we end up in a trailer park or a port-a-potty. The story rolls in, grabs you, sticks your head underwater, and makes you fight to catch a breath.

I'm guessing that by now, Charlie Kevin has really moved into his role as Yancy, as he is familiar enough with it to be comfortable, and yet attached to it enough to add some real emotion. Yancy is HIS character, but that doesn't mean he skimped out on the others. Not by any means. Nope. He plays them like he had a box full of people in his brain that he could switch out in a moment's notice. So great job all around. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Needless to say, now that my interest has been piqued I will HAVE to go an get more of this wonderful character, and see what he got himself into before this!

When Is the next book?

I've been an avid reader for some time. When I found the 4th book was out I finished it and the 5th was ready for me.

My favorite aspect of this series is the Voice, not just the narrator, though he Is on point, but the voice and flow of dialogue.

The whole tale is linked from absurd happening to vicious beating, wash & repeat.
Each triumph and defeat comes at the reader sideways, always unique enough to be entertaining.
I'll read them all again.

To the Author,
You are rocking it brother, seriously, keep that sh*t up!

What a ride!

testosterone-fest, action-adventure, fantasy, hard-boiled, snarky, situational-humor, verbal-humor

Hunter hits another one out of the park with this one!
I've liked Yancy from the beginning, but the whole thing keeps getting better and better. It's a great testosterone fest but the snarks and other humor really make it!
And Charlie Kevin has the delivery of the narration down to a science!

Yancy at his finest

Excellent book that goes to show Yancys human side is still intact but is more willing to make alliances to get the job done in the end.

DANG!!!! I wish....

I really wish the friend that gave me this book had given me the first 4 but this book for the most part can stand alone as a good book.

I really liked the characters and the story line. Now I'm off to get the first 4 and any following books.

Fun Series!

After reading the initial reviews I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this series or not but I definitely do. Yancy Lazarus is a likeable character and the author has done a fine job of creating his word and alternate planes of existence. I also love the dark humor and Yancy's rough edges. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of the series.

Charlie Kevin is an excellent narrator and does a great job with the different voices of the characters. My one complaint and really it's a pet peeve is his mispronunciation of common words and his butchery of almost all the Demon names in the series. It seems like his producers would catch and help him fix this but apparently not.....

Well Hell...

I might have an addiction. I have taken out just about all the Lazarus books in just over a week. Nonstop. It was a rocky start, again, all on me- but So well worth the Trip so far. I have finished Book 5...I have readers withdrawal now. I didn't quote expect the Rabbit hole to go THAT far down. Had a refreshing perspective of permanent retirement and it was really nice.
Like I have said in all the other reviews...if you have come THIS far...why are you bothering in reading a review. James Hunter is owed his pound of flesh, just get it...read it...and pine like me till the next book comes out.

If you liked the Dresden files this book is for you.

Magic, danger and a snarky main character makes this book fun to listen to, and the narration is worth it. I received this audio book for free at my request and voluntarily reviewed.
