Publisher's summary

From the author of Mountain Man: Encounter a new breed of fear in the first book of a bloodcurdling werewolf horror series set in the snows of Newfoundland.

In a nearly deserted village off the coast of Canada, strange things are happening. A local hunter discovers bare footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And people are beginning to ask questions about the town’s recluse.

But with winter’s most powerful weapon bearing down on the island, it’s about to get a lot worse . . .

Breeds is the first book in a trilogy of terror sure to please fans of Robert R. McCammon, Maggie Stiefvater, and Chase Novak.

PARTY DARTS

ONE YOUNG FK AT A TIME
I am a big fan of Blackmore, just read my reviews for Hospital and Mountain Man Omnibus. I was very excited to get this. I thought Blackmore came up with a unique twist on Werewolves and I really liked Max, the German Shepard. Honestly I could not keep my mind on this. Other than Max, I did not really care for any of the other characters and running around eating people only goes so far with me. Part of the problem could be the narrator. I have never really cared for his patronizing voice. Thousands love him. I knew going in, he was narrating, but if written well enough, I figured I would enjoy. I have enjoyed other books he has narrated. I am afraid this book suffers from Trilogyitis. This book was stretched out in order to save something for the next two books. I will not continue this series.

Add another feather in Keith's cap!

I LOVED THE MOUNTAIN MAN OMNIBUS! And the prequel was very much wanted and needed. Already owning all of his other works, I decided to dive into this. I'll admit it did take me about an hour to get in the "groove", but well worth the wait! And to think, I have two more additions to listen to!😎

Too violent for me

This was too violent for me - especially when it involved harming dogs. That really hits a nerve with me. I am returning this book.

Mr Blackmore is the man!

Finally Mr Blackmore returns! One of my favourite zombie authors has delivered a new title 'Breed'. It is not a zombie title but boy was it good! It gets even better, Sean Runnette is the narrator. This guy has the perfect voice for any of Keith C Blackmore's characters, that is if you speed it up to at least 1.25x speed and easily 1.5x speed in most parts.

Seriously I couldn't get enough of this one. Stuff it I am not going to sprout on about this.... just do yourself a favour and buy this one, in fact do yourself a favour and pre order the second one!

Every bit as good as the Mountain Man series. Perhaps better!

Blackmore is amazing

I didn’t know how I’d feel listening to Breeds after Mountain Man. It did take me a bit to get into this one. It wasn’t love at the first few seconds like with Gus. But once the story began to take off I was really connected.

The way Blackmore creates and layers characters is amazing, the build was slow but really pleasant. I think the sequels will be even better, I cannot wait to hear what happens.

Very vivid

This was a very entertaining book. I enjoyed the story and the authors very vivid descriptions. The only thing I found I did not like was some of the dialog between characters. While I in no way mind cussing, some of the cussing was a little excessive in some parts of the book, and seemed forced. Many of the characters ranged from 60-80 years old, and some of their dialogue was unrealistic. The verbiage sounded out of place. A 70 year old Scotch Irish werewolf saying "bring it homie", just doesn't sound right to me. But, that's just my opinion and I may have misheard the reader. Overall it was an entertaining and creative book, with some excellent descriptive writing. I will be reading part two of this series.

Action packed and riveting

If you love werewolf books, this is one you cannot pass up!  Set in a small, isolated town of Amherst Cove in Newfoundland the Warden, Borland is meddling dangerously with mother nature – he is creating a unique werewolf breed that will destroy everyone and everything.  Disillusioned with the hierarchy and rules of the werewolf world, Borland begins breeding a stronger, more deadly werewolf out of revenge.

Werewolves and Wardens, Kirk and Ross must enter Amherst and destroy Borland, a warden who doesn’t follow the rules.  Little did they know what Borland had done – with the help of a human, Ross and Kirk move to destroy Borland’s breeding successes and hide everything from the outside world.

What happens next is horrifying and goes against nature.  How many will survive the night?  And if Ross and Kirk manage to save the small cove, what happens next?  If they survive will they be able to retire with their scars and wounds or will they face the same type of fate as Borland?  Borland warned them - and now they are wondering what if!?!

Action packed and riveting, Keith Blackmore weaves a story that takes the listener deeper into the werewolf world than any other author.  Masterfully weaving horror, he is reminiscent of other horror writers who have captivated readers with everyday occurrences and objects.  Blackmore, however, is much more intense, his monsters are more deadly and provides a unique take on the werewolf tale.    Blackmore has strong writing skills, moving the story at a steady pace building his characters thoroughly and providing twists that will leave the listener shaking their head in shock.

Sean Runnette does an excellent reading of Blackmore’s Breeds, Book 1.  His ability to step into the book and inject the emotion, danger and fear is amazing.  His pitch is perfect and he has a skill that projects the right amount of cynical and sarcastic tones.   Runnette’s voice is sure, confident and calming.  I could listen to him for hours.

This is truly an excellent book if you enjoy werewolves, horror and action.   It is truly unique!

There were no issues with production, everything was clear and concise.  No background issues.

Canadian twist on werewolf lore

In the end, I did feel compelled to finish this book, and listen through to the end, so it's the main reason I went with 3 stars instead of less. The big reveal/twist for the werewolf breeds was unexpected, and I wasn't quite sure where the twists and turns would go until about two-thirds of the way through. I wanted to see how things wrapped up, however grudgingly. I haven't read a werewolf story with that particular twist before, so kudos there. And again, I did finish it, so fair enough.

Overall though, I suppose it just wasn't for me, or meant for me. It felt like a story about men, written by a man, for men. A lot of indistinguishable archetypes of taciturn, cantankerous men in their 40s-70s, throwaways about how cell phones/technology are bad, anger about Society Changing (which for the elderly werewolf I guess I got), how they need to get their prostates checked (seriously, I believe this came up for two separate characters lol). I feel it would definitely appeal to a specific kind of audience, one that prides itself on liking Real stories, not those "trashy" romance novels (lol). But for me it fell flat. I was also surprised by how off-putting the gore and violence was; I am by no means squeamish and tend to prefer (?) more visceral stories with violence that furthers the plot, but jeez there were scenes that seemed to go on for days, every bit of torn flesh/broken bone/etc laid out in detail. One last stray observation - I had a problem with the profanity, which also surprised me because usually I don't care, but the only way I can describe it is there was too much talk of buttholes? Like every male character's POV (and it was vast majority male characters) had some description of how fear or surprise or upset affected their assholes, I guess to show us that they're earthy and rough around the edges or whatever, but I began to long for just one characters whose butt I didn't have to think of.

I love this author!

This was my first book after completing "The Mountain Man"series, which took over my life it was so great! I love the originality of the story, and graphic details that at times had my mouth hanging open with shock, but no one reads a werewolf book for a romantic happy ending. I also really enjoyed the backstory of the politics of werewolf society, with "marshalls" and high order werewolves who call the shots. Can't wait to start book two!
