Publisher's summary

He lives to kill monsters. He keeps his city safe. And his silver hollow-points and back-from-the-dead abilities help him take out any kind of supernatural threat. But now an immortal evil has this bad-ass bounty hunter dead in its sights....

Ever since a monster murdered his family, Deacon Chalk hunts any creature that preys on the innocent. So when a pretty vampire girl "hires" him to eliminate a fellow slayer, Deacon goes to warn him - and barely escapes a vampire ambush. Now he's got a way-inexperienced newbie hunter to protect and everything from bloodsuckers to cursed immortals on his trail. There's also a malevolent force controlling the living and the undead, hell-bent on turning Deacon's greatest loss into the one weapon that could destroy him.

Good take on Urban Fantasy

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood and Bullets?

Deacon's snarky comments make this a fun listen.

What about Jim Beaver’s performance did you like?

Jim's gravely southern voice was a perfect match for Deacon.

My favorite Antihero of 2017

What did you love best about Blood and Bullets?

Everything. The book dark, gripping and fun. Serious I know it's a contradiction but this is the darkest book I've read that at the same time gripping and fun.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood and Bullets?

Spoilers but there is a famous biblical character and his weapon that used in the most creative way ever to establish the vampire myth. In thousands of years of the character being around in the public doman I'm shocked no one done it before, it shows how creative the author is.

Have you listened to any of Jim Beaver’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to That Thing at the Zoo which is a prequel to this story. Start here though even though that's a fine story in its own right.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had to take a break for work in sleep but otherwise it was all one sitting. This was a good one.

Any additional comments?

I buy many audible novels each year and if I'm lucky there will be three writers that stand out and I become a fan for life. For 2017 Tuck is on that list.

One for the boys

So I picked this book based on a good friend enjoying it, I did kind of forget that my friend is a male who likes hunting and is single.
This tale of Deacon Chalk is a great read if you like balls to the wall, men winning, the idea of harems and vampires. Definitely not a bad read or a bad story, its fun and filled with glory and fight scenes.
What didn't I like? Well in today's feminist world, this world of women who are all dead or emotionally/physically broken whilst still looking like they could work as strippers, left me wanting a lot more character development for them.
The character of Deacon is great, I just wanted stronger female (physically and emotionally) characters for him to equal :)

Jim Beaver is a Win

I was irrationally happy when I read that Jim Beaver -- Bobby Singer on Supernatural among other great roles -- would be narrating the Deacon Chalk books. I love the Bobby character, and I could totally hear Jim's voice as Deacon. I wasn't disappointed; it's perfect. There's not a big range of voices for the other characters, but since I had read the books before listening, I could follow. At the time of writing, only the first novella and first book are available, but I'll be watching for the others for sure. Kudos to whoever chose Jim for the voice, and thanks Jim for doing the reading! :)

The name is right

If you could sum up Blood and Bullets in three words, what would they be?

Blood and bullets.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Deacon as the whole series comes from his view everyone else doesn't get a great deal of attention.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Mr. beaver is good at voicing a tough guy. Some of the dialog was awkward, but that was the writing not the voice action.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Vampires! Guns! Merica!

Any additional comments?

Good book. Fast and fun but not very deep. This series definitely has potential. The novel equivalent of a beer commercial with vampires. If you want a tough, action oriented book you could do a lot worse than this one.

Jim Butcher brings Dean Chalk to life.

Here you have a fast paced thrill ride with tough guy Dean Chalk. This is a man haunted by the death of his family and hell bent on destroying the supernatural forces responsible for
taking their lives.
Jim Butcher does an amazing job bringing this story to life. He is Decan and we are on board for an amazingly good time. starting book 2 now.

Very hard to finish

Took 8 tries to finally finish this book. So much of the book doesn't make sense, he is supposed to be a bounty hunter but how does he get paid the bounty? And how much? He had to work 2 jobs before he did this but he all of a sudden had enough money to buy a club and enough fully automatic weapons and silver ammunition to arm a small country. To many holes in the story, the only thing he makes VERY VERY clear is how big he is, how bad he is and how many tattoos he has.

save your money, and get Monster Hunter

Any additional comments?

I got the book, because it reminded me of one of my favorite series, Monster Hunter International, by Larry Correia. Unfortunately, it turned out to be little more than fan fiction for Supernatural
