Publisher's Summary

Now a STARZ® Original Series produced by FremantleMedia North America starring Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, and Pablo Schreiber.

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday's bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies . . . and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

"Mystery, satire, sex, horror, poetic prose—American Gods uses all these to keep the reader turning the pages."—Washington Post

What the Critics Say

"This full-cast performance of the tenth anniversary edition of Neil Gaiman's American Gods (think director's cut) is one of the most mesmerizing audio experiences ever.... Ron McLarty plays a randy, crusty old Odin disguised as a white-collar con man to perfection. Daniel Oreskes's Shadow, the hero who doesn't know quite what he is, is masterful. Oliver Wyman, who did Mad Sweeney the Leprechaun, is a genius. Hats in the air for the whole cast, a flawless production, and a tour de force of a tale." (AudioFile)

    "Unknown Gods"

Creative premise. Enjoyed the exposure to old and new worlds of myth,s religions, and gods, most unknown, but intricately woven into the few I do know. Entertaining dialog. Excellent casting and engaging acting. A sequel seems possible, hope it does.

"Better than expected, not as wonderful as I hoped."

Loved the cast reading...wanted more about the gods and their stories in the new world. the battle was a it buildup and after we never hear anything about the new gods, which felt like a loose end.

    "loved the full cast reading"

I liked the interludes and exploration of the main character's thought process. Lengthy, but would recommend.

    "Lackluster Story and Performance"

The story is lackluster, with some cliche commentary on modern American culture. None of the characters are likeable. Shadow, the main character, is dull and lifeless. His ho-hum response to a world of mythological gods is implausible. The actor that voices the character is flat with zero range. It was work to finish the book to see if there was a decent twist or payoff. There wasn't. Miserably inadequate.

"Adding a full cast livens up the slow parts."

I am very much a fan of Neil Gaiman, but American Gods was never my favorite novel. It is, in parts, brilliant and intriguing but the pacing often feels like a slog. Like the cracked counter tops and dirty ashtrays in the countless diners along the way it feels weary and slow in many chapters.

That said, the voice acting on this production is vibrant and engaging and carried me through parts of the Midwest (and the story) that I would normally pass through as quickly as possible and remember very little of.

If you are like me, and wanted to enjoy this book more than it seemed to allow, this might be your way in.

"Even Better Than Reading It Myself the First Time"

This was THE most fantastically narrated audiobook I've yet to listen to and did the novel more than justice. Considering this is a book that I read nearly 15 years ago originally, it was familiar but largely forgotten, making the audiobook fresh for all intents and purposes. Having also already seen the first season of the show based on this book, I wanted to remember the differences between the novel and adaptation (a habit I seem to enjoy when it comes to Neil Gaiman's works when adapted) but wanted a quicker recallation than if I were to take the time to reread the novel for myself. This audiobook was the best of all worlds for my reasons of revisiting. The cast was outstanding and had me convinced that even Wednesday and Shadow were voiced by Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle, respectively, who played the parts in the adaptation. Excellent job on casting! This audiobook made my revisitation to American Gods a wonderful and unique experience of the story in its own right.
