Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: A favorite of Audible listeners, the first book in Martin's series introduces a world of deep intrigue, dark fantasy, and varied characters. It might prove overwhelming, were it not for Roy Dotrice. With a voice so seasoned and gripping that he may have stepped from, well, a George R. R. Martin novel, Dotrice gives each character their own persona and regionality, helping to anchor the listener throughout the action and intrigue. —Ed Walloga

Publisher's Summary

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow. At the center of the conflict, the Starks of Winterfell hold the key: a reluctant Lord Eddard is summoned to serve as the king's new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder both family and kingdom. In this land of extremes, plots and counterplots, soldiers and sorcerers, each side fights to win the deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

    Story
"Most in-depth and intense fantasy novel of the ages"

I absolutely love this story. I read it a year ago, and was so overwhelmed with the sheer intensity of the story, I couldn't read the second one. I've never watched the show.

I had my faveoite character's points of view, particularly Dany, Tyrion, Arya and Sansa. I came to dread Catelyn's chapters, nor did I care for Eddard's or Jon's. I was neutral with Bran. So this time around, I had both the book and the audiobook, so I could read my favorite chapters and listen to the chapters I had a hard time reading on my own.

Best decision ever. I already have the second audiobook and hard copy, and will be starting it while I do laundry and dishes. The audiobooks are great. I don't have to choose between chores and reading. My boyfriend really likes this as well because it means chores actually get done without too much whining on my part.

The narration was okay for me. I didn't particularly care for his gruff voice. I could hear the way the characters sounded in my voice and really didn't care for most of his interpretations...however, it's kind of like watching the movie based off of your favorite book. It can never live up to your total expectations. Also, the narrator kept good pace and DID have distinct voices for the many, many characters so that it was distinguishable and recongizable, which is something amazing considering how many different characters are introduced in the first book alone.

Can't wait to start A Clash of Kings!

Terrific performance by Roy Dortice! By using different voices for the characters, it was easy to follow along with the storyline.

at first I didn't care for the voice .... by the end I was sad to hear it end....
I haven't watched the show and I have no intention of doing so until I get through the books. I understand now, why the story is so popular.

"I enjoyed th is book and the story"

this series needs a full cast. Mr Dotrice's preformace was done well but with so many characters both male and female young and old .....they all sound the same with slight variation here and there..... overall it is a great story and I look forward to the rest in the series .

"The narrator... not feeling his take on the charac"

After watching the show, the narrator doesn't fit. I can't get used to it. Not exactly fair but i think a different narrator would make it much easier to listen to. Even a few people should be brought in for this series at this point of success.
