Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Best series you'll ever read!

GRRM does a fantastic job keeping you entertained & Roy Dotrice does well narrating! May Roy rest in peace. The narrator does mispronounce characters once in a while & his voices for different characters start to sound the same after a while but overall he keeps you will immersed in the drama.

Epic Sword and Sorcery continues....

The journey of the Starks, Lanisters and Fray continue. I've never watched the series so I have no comparison. But this is an epic tale of familes that lie, kill, decieve, love, hate, betrayal as all aspire to a greatness that most will never attain or achieve no matter what they do and how hard they try. It is those in the shadows that seem to be the strongest. Some by guile others by sheer strength of will. The youngest and seemingly most helpless are actually the strongest and most resourceful as seen by Araya's determination to survive and keep a promise she has made to herself. Bran, crippled by a Lansister holding a secret even he is afraid to confront. Danyaries who has her dragons to further her cause while also being the reason, other than being the last of her linage, others want to possess her. But young as she is, she is no longer naive and continues on her quest. Rob once considered only a boy has done what others twice his age have not or could not as he continues to harry the Lanisters and their cohorts. Sansa has finally had the rosey dream of knights ripped from her, the tales of chivalry being just that as she suffers at the hand of the petulant and demented boy-king. And Jon who is now a member of the Black Wall who has proven himself trice over as he and Snow fight the coming darkness and cold that threaten to overtake the lands south of the wall...the list is long as to why one should listen or read this epic saga. There ae times when it appears to be slow but keep with it as it is all a backdrop story to what has happened that will affect the future of those sourrounding these families as the battle for the Iron Throne contines.
If you are a fan of Lord of The Rings, then this is one that should also be experienced. And as before, Mr.Dotrice is wonderful in his narration of this epic tale.

Great sequel. I'm hooked!

I appreciate how there's very little gap between the Song of Ice and Fire books. It keeps the momentum going.

Most of my critiques and praises are mirrored from Book 1. I will say it again: put aside your expectations. I was a fan of the show in its heyday and didn't have the highest expectations of the books beyond something fun to read in my free time. I was pleasantly surprised! A gripping story with real fantastic worldbuilding and character writing. Only a few gripes with the actual material, all easily overlooked.

The narrator is a mixed bag. He's a great orator and puts a lot of effort into his performance, but his accents aren't the best and his pronunciations of certain names and conlang phrases are really abysmal.

Book 2 has much for punch in it than the first one in my opinion. Less wind-up and more bloody meat of the narrative. That said, there are a lot of elements which feel as though they're just setting things up for Book 3. Not really an issue, as I'm hooked on the series now, but it can make some plotlines seem a little long.

Definitely recommend! If you're a fan of fantasy you'll have every reason to like this.

Exceptionally beautiful!

It was wonderful to behold. Such an epic tale of battle, magic, intrigued, betrayal and clash of houses with battle unforgotten. I enjoy it and felt lovely, enrich with memory to reckon with and soon to treasure.
