Publisher's Summary

Listeners will be captivated by 47 Ronin, a novelization by Joan D. Vinge.

From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 Ronin. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors. 47 Ronin is helmed by visionary director Carl Erik Rinsch (The Gift). Inspired by styles as diverse as Miyazaki and Hokusai, Rinsch will bring to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battles that will display the timeless Ronin story to global audiences in a way that’s never been seen before.

Boring, Boring, Boring

Short and sweet--
The writing is VERY repetitive and often juvenile.
The narrator has a singsong delivery and doesn't offer much distinction with character voices. So far as I can tell, he doesn't completely butcher the Japanese names and vocabulary. He gets an extra star for that.
After about three hours I could no longer tolerate listening.
I have over 650 books in my library.
This is the only book I've ever returned.

Book written for the movie

This story has its roots in a historical event and is an above average story in my opinion. The book does have differences from the movie but I think the book was commissioned by the studio for the movie. In general I think books written this way suffer but this one had a good base to start with and it seems to be hard to find a book that deals with honor and loyalty.

What a load of old tosh

What would have made 47 Ronin better?

Actually using language more similar to the structure of that used in that (fictional) time.

Has 47 Ronin put you off other books in this genre?

No

Would you be willing to try another one of Steve Baker’s performances?

It wasn't that bad, the writing was appauling.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was introduced to stories about Japan by James Clavell's Shogun which was brilliant. Since then, I've been fascinated about tales of old Japan and the principle of Bushido. However, I am not a martial arts nutter. This book tells an ancient story and is worth far greater literary talent than the writer of this load of rubbish.

Any additional comments?

Don't waste your money.
