Cardinal Borja is gathering votes to bring the Church's reformers to a halt in their tracks, on the orders of the King of Spain.
Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in the streets, shadowy agitators are stirring up trouble, and Spain's armies are massed across the border in the Kingdom of Naples, Cardinal Barberini wants the pamphleteers to stop slandering him, and it looks like it's going to be a long, hot summer. Filling in
I like the series but what I find a bit disconcerting is that the books are being released out of sequence. it's been almost a year and a half since the Papal stakes was published. so much of that book relies on actions that are covered in this book. I just wished that someone too a overview of the whole series and released these books in a logical order.

Shows how the "good guys" don't always get the initial win.
I love how this book shows the machinations of idiots with a bit of power, and the outcome(s) of said actions, and how the most canny of political animals can be caught wrong footed by an amateur.

Villain Quevedo
I loved this volume. particularly how Francisco Quevedo ends up being a villain in service of his most Catholic Majesty the king of Spain. although there were missed opportunities to talk about his poetry, and his distinctive pince-nez glasses!

Mixed feelings
Ok so I love this series but there was a weird moment that made me stop and go what the fuck. That was when frank stone causally drops the word Faget. In the middle of a life or death situation when he is facing certain death he stops to describe something as "fagetiest" and that just felt so out of character and off base for frank. It took me out of the story and I'm docking what would have been four stars one star for doing so. Other wise a great entry
