Picked it up by accident...
I had multiple tabs opened and added to the cart, intending on another book. Realized my mistake but decided to roll with it. Turned into a happy surprise! I couldn't stop listening! Didn't expect to like the short story aspect, but it played out like a TV show with a full season story arc. Absolutely amazing and fun! Now I'm googling everything John G. Hartness trying to find out when Grits, Guns, & Glory will be out on Audible. (I used the Oxford comma because I'm a civilized human being *cough*Amazon*cough*)

Bubba is so charismatic
This book was a pleasant surprise. I got out of my comfort zone without thinking to much, and it exceeded my expectations.
Bubba is a red neck monster hunter working for the Roman Catholic Church, along with his techy friend Skeeter and Uncle Father Joe. The book is divided in two parts. The fist part is composed of short stories. I am not usually keen on short stories, but Bubba's story got me hooked due to his personality and southern ways. The short stories could be read separately but they are like episodes of a series. In each one, Bubba fights against a different monster, be like vampires, zombies or even cupides. The second part is the prequel Family Tradition, and we learn about Bubba's past and this leads to the cliffhanger on which the story ends.
When I started this audiobook I was not sure if I was going to like it. I was misled by the red neck jokes and excessive mention of titty bars, and thought that Bubba was going to leave me indifferent. But there is more to Bubba than what meets the eye, and the short stories and especially Family Tradition deepen into his character, and I will forgive John G. Hartness for the cliffhanger and listen to the second book as soon as I can. I just need to know Bubba better.
I like fantasy, but I usually do not do vampires or zombies. In this case I did not mind, since Bubba is so charismatic that we mainly focus on how he talks, his attitude and his grit.
The characters' personalities are well defined, and the dialogs are fluid and realistic. I think one of the more difficult things on a book are dialogs, and Hartnell has created some fresh ones. It was like listening to real conversations.
Andrew McFerrin does an excellent job portraying Bubba and the rest of characters. The book is written in first person, so it is important how well McFerrin impersonates Bubba, and believe me, he becomes the monster hunter, imitating a realistic southern accent and using the right tone for each moment. Skeeter's voice was also easily recognizable, and I knew who was talking at every moment. I could close my yes and see them all talking with their distinctive voices. McFerrin was ace here.
I think this book will delight not only monsters and fantasy fans. Even if you think that this book is not for you, give it a try, you will fall in love with Buba's story. I sure did!

One of my new Favorites!
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I think some authors are afraid that the world has become too complex for the simple, but old concept of Good vs Evil. But to me, the best storytelling starts with a Lovable Good Guy and an Evil, Hatable Bad Guy. Bubba the Monster Hunter is a great character with a heart of gold, who cheerfully fights evil monsters. I love that he drinks beer and goes to strip clubs.. in fact my only complaint is that halfway through the book he stops going to strip clubs.
This book is fun, funny, and will make you cheer at the climax. I recommend to anyone who enjoys the Superhero or Contemporary Fantasy Genres. I'll be first in line to purchase Book 2!

Bubba Breaks you in right!
For those of you new to this amazing series, let me lay this out for you. You want to pick this up right now and set to listening right away. This is something any fan of In Search of, X-Files, Beverly Hillbillies, and Dukes of Hazzard would enjoy. It's kind of like Larry Correia's MHI, only with more beer and a lot more silliness. Bubba is an exceptional man. He hunts monsters for the church with his best buddy, Skeeter, a gay black dude (his words) who doesn't take any of Bubba's crap. Bubba likes to drink as much as he does shoot monsters, and this is the introduction into a world of a man whose neck is redder than most, whose gun, Bertha, blasts more caps than a Compton gang, and whose sole mission is to kack as many minions of evil he can before breakfast at the strip club.
This might sound trite and cheesy, but Hartness manages to pull this off. It is fun and full of big belly laughs, andin my opinion some of the very best stories in the series are the early ones, just because we get to know the characters a little piece at a time. What could be offensive is just plain old fun, and the monsters we meet are not always the same old run of the mill biters and walkers you see in every other series.
My biggest complaint is the cover of the book collection. It really does nothing to make you want to read this book. It has a great title, but the road sign does nothing for me as a reader scanning through a list of books seeking something new and exciting. The shorts always had some doofy cartoony images on them, which worked. You knew the series wasn't a grim and gritty knock off of every other monster hunting book out there. I really wish there was more to this cover to pul in a reader who has no idea of what Bubba and Co. are all about.
Having long been a Bubba fan since the shorts started appearing, I sort of listened to the collections backwards. As a result I got to know Solo as the main narrator, and feel in love with his style, delivery, and rendition of Bubba. This book collection, however, has Andrew McFerrin doing the honor of introducing us to the big man. McFerrin is good, he has a nice voice, his ennunciation and pronunciations are on point, and he carries the story well. I really have no complaints about him at all, he does a fine job, and you will enjoy every syllable he utters. When Solo pops up in the next collection, though you will see just how sunburnt Bubba's neck ought to be. Still, I cannot slight or fault McFerrin at all. He does a wonderful job, and there is no way he will disappoint you.
I want to note that the stories all connect to one another, and reference back on occassion to past deeds. This is not a set of individual stories. There is a connector in the over all background of the book. Each story is full of action, funny business, what I call Bubba Wisdom, and monsters. Can't go wrong there. Like I said, this is the start of something awesome. Once you begin you will not want to put this down. You will listen all the way through, and then zip off to get the next season. I promise you that. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Snarky, okay plot, characters, basically shallow
Another snarky main character book, this time with a big Southern good-ol-boy point of view. The trend for barely turned out books with snarky dialogue in place of wit and clever turns of a phrase continues.
Between bouts of nonfiction books, a funny, laugh-out-loud, book is welcome. Searching for a well-written entertaining book with laughs and some depth is becoming frustrating.
Great feedback and decent rating numbers got me to buy this book, but it is as two dimensional as a video game. The stereotyping of females is tiresome.
The character is cleverly designed, but that only goes so far. The Monster Hunter series by Larry CorreiaI was pretty good, so I thought I'd try out this author, but where author Larry Correia was a master at action scenes and descriptions, this book is simple and pretty shallow.
Meh. Four hours left to listen, but I stopped listening some days ago and have no interest in returning to the stories. There were portions I had missed what was said because I fell asleep or got distracted. It wasn't worth going back to where I had left off.

(sigh) Oh Bubba
Any additional comments?
I'm from Texas and I love Bubbas and rednecks and I anticipated lots of laughs, but Bubba and his number one associate both become very trite. I wish the stereotype had been a part of our hero and not all of our hero. I was smothered and covered in sarcasm and fight scenes. It's unusual for me, but I quit in the middle. I will finish it later and make another review if it changes my mind, but I had to take a break. I just couldn't become invested in Bubba.

Highly entertaining
Bubba is exactly the kind of campy, low-brow humor I was looking for. Lots of funny redneck stereotypes, laugh-out-loud one-liners, and strip clubs, and I haven't been this entertained in a while. If you took Dog, the bounty hunter, and gave him the personality of Larry the Cable Guy, you might have some idea what Bubba is like. His best friend Skeeter reminds me a little of Gus from Psych. I cannot recommend this book more highly!

Not in the MONSTER HUNTERS universe
I assumed this was in the same universe as the monster Hunter books by Larry Correia. Not at all. The narration is too annoying to listen to. I wish I could figure out how to remove from my library. Chalk it up to a waste of a credit . If I couldn’t shut it off I’d have to bludgeon my I-phone to death.

Everything you want it to be and better!
Humorous Urban Fantasy works are almost always among my favorites, but SS&C was even more fun than I was expecting. Bubba is a grand, bad-ass, delightful, lovable, lamentable character and I just couldn't get enough (purchased and started Season 2 within two minutes of finishing this volume). The stories are short and well paced with a larger world and story unfolding neatly in the background at a level that keeps you interested without disrupting the flow of individual stories. Additionally, this work is perfectly suitable for an audio experience and the reader does an excellent job.
I loved the stories, I loved Bubba, and I think I have a little crush on Skeeter. I hope he likes bears. Looking forward to the next volume and more.
