vintage binchy

Would you listen to Scarlet Feather again? Why?

I love Maeve Binchy's stories, the way characters are developed and evolve over time, and that they may recur in later tales. Each time through, I notice something different. They aren't overly complex, but her gentle view of humanity is a pleasure.

Love the story line, love the narrator.

Barbara Caruso is one of the best narrators ever. I have listened to this story- Scarlet Feather several times over the years, and it's never lost its interest to me. Several lives within the story- all connected to each other. I love it! Maeve Binchy did great on this book

As Always

Would you listen to Scarlet Feather again? Why?

Possibly. Just to catch some of the phrasing I may have missed.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kathy and Tom. Doggedly devoted and always there for their friends. Kathy is strong enough to realize when she's wrong and go on.

What does Barbara Caruso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has good expression and gives each character their own individual voice.

Any additional comments?

Binchy is always good. This may not have been my favorite book of hers but she can tell a very real and believable story that keeps the small twists going. I love her character development and real -life stories that are good without gratuitous violence, back stabbing and violation.

Horrible Narrator

After thoroughly enjoying Maeve Binchy's Week In Winter and Tara Road (narrated by Rosalyn Landor and Katherine Borowitz, respectively), I was looking forward to another great story in Scarlet Feather. However, I could not get past the unpleasant narration by Barbara Caruso. Absolutely every sentence is dripping with overacting. The dramatic pauses, breathlessness, and emphatic exclamation just makes this book exhausting and hard to follow. The relentless intonations are unrelated to what is actually going on and detract from the story-- drama for the sake of drama, not connected to the storyline. I really tried, but after about an hour and a half, I surrendered. I will go out of my way to avoid this narrator from now on.

beautiful story Maeve binchy

spoiled by Barbara Caruso, who barked out the words in a county Cork accent. I couldn't listen to her ever again.
