Story
His touch can heal or harm. His fate is solitary. His agony belongs to us all…He was born on a day of pain: November 22, 1963. He came of age in agony: that moment of tragedy when fun-loving rock-and-roll deejay Paul Handler discovered the inexplicable power in his own hands. It is the power to make the wounded whole again. The power to make the lame walk and to heal the sick. It is a power that will sap his soul and plunge him into the world of a famous faith healer. It is a power that can turn to rage, even murder. It is a gift that makes Paul Handler a living, breathing human sacrifice. For thousands of years, a secret cabal has guarded the lineage to which Paul is heir — scapegoats who have been forced to bear humanity's anguish upon themselves. Now, while the cabal searches for him, and one man seeks to destroy him, Paul makes a lonely, frightening journey to the core of his identity and to his destiny … to all the pain his soul can bear, to all the redemption he can give, to the freedom that is death.

Story
It's the Arizona Territory. The year, 1848. The year the Mexican War ended. Fate and blazing pistols have just thrown together reporter and part-time drunk Marion T. Bell and the very nearly legendary John Charles Hart, mustanger and scout, in the Little Fanny Saloon. Plying the river-trade across the Colorado to the gold fields of California in the north, and war-torn Mexico to the south, the town of Gable's Ferry has sprung up overnight-lacking only a church, a schoolhouse and a jail.

"There's things out there that you ain't dreamed of. Like back-from-the-dead mountain men, green ghost mountain spirits, carrion stallion, time-traveling mad scientists and zombified buffalo... just for starters." This weird western novella starts at a gallop and gathers momentum faster than a stampeding avalanche. You will never look at a severed head the same way again.

After 12 years, Corrie Phaeder is returning home to Orangefield - the last place in the world he wants to be. Orangefield is a town of nightmares, a town where the impossible and the horrific happen all too often, where ghosts rise screaming from their graves, and where trick-or-treating goblins have no need for scary costumes. This is a great short story and well worth reading. I highly recommend reading the book with the audiobook. Michael Bray writes a great story and A W Salamander really does a masterful job of bringing the characters to life. I can't say enough about how well done this audiobook is.

great way to spend a hour.
I requested this audio book in exchange for a honest review.
Well this was a nice way to spend a hour! We have 3 boys that decide to check out a local urban legend. They find the scarecrows all right! I liked this story. the characters were ok but it was more the subtle things they said that really made me take notice. "It's in the soil." what is and how long has it been there? Well we don't find out but i was ok with that. This is a great listen for the Halloween season or lifestyle.

Would make a great horror movie
I love short horror stories like this. This tale of a couple of boys who take a prank turned bad and get trapped on a farm with a crazy old farmer and are surrounded by fields filled with scarecrows that are animate and have a thirst for blood. What gets creepier is as the old man tells the story of how those scarecrows get there. Some really great twists in here. Scarecrows
What would you do if you were surrounded by scarecrows that can move, make people do things they'd never do before?
This is a short story but it's packed full of everything that makes a good novel.
S. W. Salzman is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators. His performance is amazing and his voice was made for stories like this.
